Note: [Dake.ftw] A Charles Deake was listed in Army Accounts of North Carolina Line: Sept 1784 -1786 INFO ON DAKETOWN HOMESTEAD From: TSmith4215@aol.com Subject: dake homestead via ruth donogh request To: mldake@adelphia.net my name is thomas smith, currently living in selkirk, ny; but i grew up in saratoga springs. my father's family is from middle grove, ny where my grandfather owned a farm till about 1951. from your website, i can establish that charles deake sr and charles deake jr are my 4x & 3x great grandfathers. the info you have there pretty much (going by memory - not checking my written records) matches the info i have. ruth donogh, my second cousin, has researched many aspects of our family tree thoroughly. her info would match mine. this past sept. 2006, we had a family reunion where we visited many dake family sites. she says you have been to the cemetary where charles sr. & jr. are buried. these two, as you probably, know fought at the battle of bennington during the revolutionary war; as this is where they Residence at the time. i have been researching that this past year, and despite some old maps and publications, i have not been able to independently locate an exact location of their farm or even the church where charle jr.'s wife's grandfather was the pastor. from the location of the dake cemetary in greenfield township (on the north creek rd.) proceed north less than .5 mile to sand creek rd., turn left, in about .3 miles turn left on daketown rd. to the right side there is an old daketown rd. angling off. it is mostly dirt, gravel and sometimes just grassy. if you miss this turn, it rejoins the daketown road in less than .5 miles again. on this road at the west end. north side is a fairly well maintained daketown school house ( 1 room schoolhouse). when facing this schoolhouse, walk to the right, back towards the sand hill rd. in direction. in the woods, with signs posted state land on the trees, on your left side you'll notice a stone wall of an old farm field paralleling the road. follow this, maybe .1-.2 miles,a few hundred feet, the wall in a round curve, bends away from the road. this is the driveway into the homestead. it is overgrown, mostly bushes, but walkable. follow the wall in, 5-8 min. walk; the wall ends and the foundation is on the right when you walk just a little further. if any further location information is needed, just email me. my phone is 518-439-1538 cousinly, tom smith
