Notes
a. Note:   *re: Charlotte's birth date: per m/1. record: age 17y so b.1855; per personal opinion says not known but says "always calculated b.1852", though also says 16y at m/1. so b.1856, & also says 10y1d younger than George, so b.1853; per sister, Nora's opinion: b.1854
*per Charlotte referring to her m/2. "I kind of feel that marriage was a fake, when our third Baby was born that I tried to find him (Justice of Peace). When I was going to quit him (George H) because he abused me so, I told him I did not think he and I were married. He said 'Hell, I know that. You are free to go anytime you have a mind to.' So I guess the marriage was a fake"; "when he struck me... I had him arrested there in Mio, Oscoda Co, Mich, and they were about to send him over the road, and I had not the heart to send him...The Judge from Harrisville, Mich, came to Mio to hold court...and asked me whether I would consent to the release of the defendent, if he gave me a bill of divorce and I said I would. The court then gave me a long paper-don't know what it said on it-and said that paper was the equivalent of a divorce...That happened in 1899 about. The court also awarded me a settlement, made soldier turn over to me 40 acres of land in Oscoda Co, Mich., five cows, and span of horses...Soldier later drove me off that 40 acres and took cows and horses and I had to get away to save my life"
*per Sarah Lockwood: "Grandma Helmer" r.ca 1934 w/Gusler's near Fairview, MI; "Grandma Helmer" moved to Harrison or Clare, MI & stayed with a Mr. Myers on a farm, "took care of 2 old bachelors", till her death during WW II; d.ca 1943-1944 Clare Co, MI [no death record for Charlotte Helmer in Clare Co]
per 1900 census, George was widowed & Charlotte was not in the home. My Uncle George Brown & Aunt Eleanora McIntyre both say they stayed with "Grandma Helmer" when they were small. [Sarah Lockwood has let me copy several photos of Charlotte as a very old lady; one with Geoge Houck as an adult (looks like mid-30s) & his children; at least one photo also has Edwin, George, & Eleanora Brown as small children]
