The Mercury (Hobart, Tas. : 1860 - 1954), Monday 12 December 1921, page 4 ' It is with very great regret that we announco tho death of Mr. John Adams, secretary of the Hobart Marine Board, which waa as sudden as it was unexpected. Tho deceased'' attended his office for the last time on Saturday week, and in the afternoon was at work in his garden. On the nest day, not feeling well, he arranged for'«, deputy to take his place at Chalmers Churcn, at which he was au officebearer, as well as choirmaster. His medical adviser was called in, and on Wednesday morning he was removed to Highbury Hospital, where he died on Saturday morning from enterio fever and septicomia. The news of his death caused quite a shock to the community. H© was held in widespread respect and esteem, and was universally popular* Ho hailed from Whitehaven, Cumberland (Eng.), wliere he was bom in 1869. Educated in his nalivotown, he was clork thero to the Official Receiver in Bankruptcy until May, 1888, when ha left for Hobart to .ioin his parents, his father, ¡Mr. Joseph Adams, being an engineer in this city. For seven months ' Mr. Adams was in the offico of Messrs. Dobson, Mitchell, and Allport, and in February, 1889, lie joined tho literary staff of "Tho Mercury," ou which lie performed excellent work. In J]jly, 11891, ho resigned to join the service of the Hobart Marine Board an clerk, and on Octoher 1, 1899, was appointed acting secretary on the retirement of Mr. H. Smith, who had held tho position since 1877, and was appointed secretan* on October 2, 1300. Mr. Adams filled the position of secretary with conspicu- » ous ability, and he was held in tho highest esteem by the wardens, who regarded him as a mOEt painstaking and conscientious officer. He kept himself well informed of harbour practice in the chief ports of the world, and had a great fund of information on mar»-' timo matters for thoso who desired it. He contributed articles to various periodicals on Hobart port matters, bc trides preparing tlie matter for thd booklets issued by the Marine Board. He showed great capacity for organisation, and so complete were the records' of the Board's proceedings that information on any matter for any period was always instantly available whefl called for. Mr. Adams was an immediate Pastmasîer of the Union (Masoni^ Lodge, a member of the committee of the Listitution for Blind, Deaf und Dumb, a. member of the Sandy Bay Rifle Club, afld_ treasurer of the King Edward Memorial Fund. Ho leaves a widow undM-wn sons, and both of his parents also survivo him._ Flags wera half-masted in shipping circles and on city houses on Saturday out of respect to his memory.
