In those day's there were "street photographers" who would take pictures of people at random in hopes of selling them portraits. One such photographer took her picture and asked her for her name so she could come claim the photograph. This was written on a coupon and the carbon handed back to her. She went down the block and discarded it, where upon Fred picked it up and later called on her. Fred served his country in WW-II in the Navy where he was a cook on submarines. As with most men of his generation, he would not discuss any details of his service. He did say he was turned down for military service due to varicose veins in his legs, so he went to a surgeon and had them removed then went to the Navy recruiter never mentioning that he had been turned down prior. One of the "happy" times during the war was when his ship docked at Guam and he met up with his brother-in-law Tommy Jones, and his long time friend Wendel Price. Fred was a self-made multi-millionaire. After the service, he was a butcher at a Delchamps grocery store in Montgomery, AL, which became a medium size chain of stores headquartered in Mobile, AL. His hard work and savy rendered regular promotions until he was finally second in charge of the entire chain of stores that covered several states. Only the founder of the chain himself had more authority. Fred and Lela never had any children, but they made up for it by their generosity of self to their nieces and nephews. Several of us could be found everyday and night during the summer at the lake house, where, though we each had our "chores", we were rewarded with unlimited use of the boats and recreation equipment... not to mention the fantastic meals. When we were grown, Fred thought nothing of tossing us the keys to his forty-foot motor home (new one every year) along with a credit card for fuel and say "Have a good time!". He was generous to a fault.
