S. A. William Jasper Rhodes, born ca. 1834, in Pike County, Alabama enlisted ~n July 19,1861, at Troy by Capt. W. L. Hamner for a period "for the war". He was age 25,5' tall, with sandy hair, blue eyes and fair complexion. His company was sent to Auburn in September and designated Co. "H" at the organization of the 18th Alabama Infantry Regiment. After a period of training at Auburn and Mobile the regiment was ordered to Corinth, Miss. and made a part of a brigade with the 17th and 19th of Alabama under General J. K. Jackson. The 18th fought the first day at the Battle of Shiloh and sustained heavy losses. In April 1863, the regiment joined the Army of Tennessee. At the Battle of Chickamauga, Pvt. Rhodes was wounded in the hand and arm on September 20. 1863. Probably at the Battle of Ezra's Chapel, he was captured near Atlanta on August 5, 1864. He was first sent by Nashville before arriving at a military prison in Louisville, KY on August 12. Then on August 13 he was forwarded to the military prison at Camp Chase, Ohio where he remained until March 18, 1865, and then transferred to Point Lookout Prison,Maryland. After the surrender in April of 1865, he was released from Point Lookout Prison and sent to Montgomery where he was given a parole and allowed to return home.
