SARAH ANN3 HANCOCK (CLEMENT2, CLEMENT1) was born October 30, 1835 inprob. Sumpter County, Georgia, and died 1910 in Crawford County, Georgia. She married ALBERT SCARBOROUGH February 20, 1859 in Sumpter County,Georgia. He was born March 02, 1826 in Houston County, Georgia, and diedOctober 24, 1899 in Crawford County, Georgia. Notes for SARAH ANN HANCOCK: Sara's husband, Albert Scarborough, served four years during the WarBetween the States. He was captured at Richmond, Virginia when the warended. Sarah applied for a pension on 16 September 1907 which was denied. In the April 29, 1910 issue of THE CRAWFORD COUNTY NEWS, under theheading "Widows Entitled to Pensions" is Sarah Scarborough, husbandAlbert, married 1856, Co. C, Reg. 10 Ga Batt, Enlisted 1862 at Macon, GA.Discharged 1865, Richmond, Va. Witness, W. T. Mimms. Sarah Scarborough is enumerated on the 1910 Crawford County census in thehousehold of John W. Moody and his wife Alice E. Moody, formerlyScarborough, Sarah's daughter. In households nearby were Cliff Moody andwife Etter and daughter Eloise; Berry Moody and wife Clara; and OscarMoody and wife Mary L. and son LeeRoy. These were sons of John W. andAlice E. Moody. Albert and Sara are buried in the Clement Hancock cemetery along withClement, Jr., Temperance, Mary Hancock, Amanda Hatcher Hancock, WilbornHancock and Wilborn's daughter Willie Roena. Sara was the last person tobe buried in the Hancock Cemetery. The following story comes from Terre Moody Walker who maintains a websitecalled the "Briar Patch". Terre descends from Sarah Hancock and AlbertScarborough through their daughter Alice Eugenia Scarborough who marriedJohn Wesley Moody. "Grandma Sarah was living in Sumter Co., Georgia near the Andersonvillestockade during the War. Her sister Rachael lived nearby. Times werereally hard in the South during the War. After Sherman's savage rape ofGeorgia, families were left with very little; many had only the clotheson their backs. Grandma Sarah and her sister Rachael would take whatlittle food they could spare, wrap it in a kerchief and throw it over thestockade wall to the starving Union prisoners. The kerchief would bethrown back across with a rock enclosed assisting the toss. One day thekerchief was thrown back and enclosed was a gold wedding band, the giftof a thankful soldier. As of the 1980s this ring was in the possession ofone of Grandma Sarah's g-g granddaughters." Notes for ALBERT SCARBOROUGH: Albert Scarborough and his wife Sarah Ann Hancock are buried in theClement Hancock cemetery on US Highway 80 near Knoxville, Georgia.Albert's grave has a marker with the following information: Co. E. 5th GAInf CSA, b. Mar 2 1826; d. Oct 24 1899. Sarah Ann is buried next to himbut there is no marker to indicate her grave. (NOTE: A marker has beenplaced on her grave with money contributed by several of her descendants.JRH) According to Bobby Stokes, the marker for Albert Scarborough is outsidethe boundary of the cemetery, thus placed incorrectly. On Albert's application for pension he gave his date of birth as March 2,1826, Houston County, Georgia and the date of his marriage to Sarah AnnHancock as 20 February 1859 in Sumter County, Georgia. Albert died 24October 1899. From Terre Walker's "Briar Patch" website: "On May 11, 1861, Albert enlisted in Co. E, 5th Georgia Infantry Regimentand served until Aug. 16, 1862. The muster roll of Aug. 6, 1861 showedAlbert as a nurse in the hospital at Pensacola, Florida. He wasdischarged in 1862 as being over age; however, two months later, on Nov.20, 1862, he reenlisted as a hospital steward with Co. C, 10th Battalion,Georgia Infantry and served in that capacity until the end of the war. .. . His records show he was paroled on April 16, 1865 to return home. "The story passed down through his family was that he was selling sewingmachines from door to door and collecting the payments for the machinessold. During one period of time, he failed to forward the money collectedon to the factory or distributor. When they began looking for Albert ortheir money, Albert left the state and did not return until he was quiteold." Supposedly, when Albert did return to his home in Crawford County, Sarah, his wife was working on the back porch when he walked up. Sarah is saidto have greeted him calmly and told him to come in and wash up, thatsupper would soon be on the table. JRH Children of SARAH HANCOCK and ALBERT SCARBOROUGH are: i. FRANKLIN C.4 SCARBOROUGH, b. Abt. 1859. Notes for FRANKLIN C. He married MARY JANE "POLLY" GUNTER December 15, 1855 inCrawford County, Georgia. She died 1907. Notes for WILBORN H. HANCOCK: After having two children Wilborn H. Hancock joined Company F, 57thGeorgia Volunteer Infantry on May 3, 1862. He was with the Army ofTennessee and took a minnie ball in his chest at Vicksburg, Mississipi. He was captured when Vicksburg fell on July 4, 1863 and was hospitalizedfirst in Mississippi then in Macon, Georgia, as late as September 28,1864, with cronic bronchitis. He died at home June 20, 1865 and wasburied in the Clement Hancock cemetery in Crawford County.. A thirdchild, Willie Roena, born on June 25, 1862, after he had entered service, died on September 12, 1868 and was buried beside him. His wife, Polly, never remarried. She spent most of her remaining years with her daughter"Lenora" Long in Tift County but was brought back to Mt. Paron forburial. Wilborn H. Hancock's grave is at the foot of the grave of AlbertScarborough. There is a marker on Wilborn's grave which reads: Wilborn H.Hancock, Co F 57th GA Inf CSA, b. Oct 24 1835, d. June 20, 1865. Next toWilborn's grave is that of his daughter. Her marker reads: Willie RowenaHancock, b. June 25 1862, daughter of W. H. Hancock. No date of death, but the grave is very small. JRH Notes for MARY JANE "POLLY" GUNTER: July 4, 2000 - I received an email from Brian K. McCarthy, descendant ofWilborn H. Hancock and Mary Gunter. He sent me a four-generation reporton his ancestress, Eugenia Lenora Hancock, Wilborn and Mary's daughter. The data entered for Eugenia is Brian's data. JRH Children of WILBORN HANCOCK and MARY GUNTER are: 56. i. EUGENIA ELANORA4 HANCOCK, b. November 07, 1856, Crawford County,Georgia; d. 1921. 57. ii. RODOLPHUS JEROME HANCOCK, b. January 04, 1859, Crawford County,Georgia; d. May 02, 1943, Ft Valley,, Georgia. iii. WILLIE ROENA HANCOCK, b. June 25, 1862, Crawford County,Georgia; d. September 12, 1868, Crawford County, Georgia. Notes for WILLIE ROENA HANCOCK: Willie Rowena Hancock is buried in the Clement Hancock, Jr. cemetery nextto the grave of her father Wilborn Hancock. Her grave is marked with asmall headstone. 24. THOMAS JACKSON3 HANCOCK (CLEMENT2, CLEMENT1) was born February 02,1838 in Crawford County, Georgia, and died December 03, 1864 in Richmond,Virginia. He married HENRIETTA EMMALINE HOLLOMAN July 28, 1857 inCrawford County, Georgia, daughter of JOHN HOLLOMAN and MIRIAM HICKS. Shewas born June 12, 1840 in Crawford County, Georgia, and died August 03,1900 in Crawford County, Georgia. Notes for THOMAS JACKSON HANCOCK: Thomas joined Company C, 27th Regiment of Georgia Volunteer Infantry withthe Army of Tennessee on September 10, 1861, the same day that hisbrother Henry H. Hancock joined the same Regiment. He was with the Armyof Virginia until December 1, 1864 when he became ill with pneumonia andwas hospitalized in Richmond. He died there on December 3, 1864 and isburied in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond. (NOTE: This information comesfrom several family sources. I have not researched the CSA records forThomas.) Thomas and Emeline Hancock's two children, Laura and Thomas, Jr, who diedyoung, are buried in Mt. Paron Church Cemetery on US Highway 80, betweenLizella and Roberta, Georgia. (Note: Mt. Paron is no longer called bythat name. It is now Bethany Bible Chapel, another Baptist denomination, not Primitive Baptist.) Another researcher, Marcelle Bridgeman of Milledgeville, Georgia, hasdifferent statistics for Thomas Jackson Hancock's Civil War service.Bridgeman states that Thomas served in the military in 1864/65 inConfederate States of America. And that he enlisted in Co. E. of the 9thGeorgia Volunteer Infantry, Army of Northern Virginia on April 6, 1864,and that he surrendered with his company at Appomattox, Virginia on april9, 1865. I believe this information is incorrect. JRH The following information comes from a copy of a record page from theHolloman/Hancock family bible which is now in the possession of MerlynHolloman Whiting, of Warner Robins, Georgia. This loose page was placedin the John Hatcher, Jr. family bible by Lizzie Mae Hancock when theHatcher bible was in her possession. The Hatcher bible was passed intothe possession of Charlotte Burnett Thrasher who has recently (2001) mademe custodian of the bible until we can find a repository for it. Information from the Holloman/Hancock bible: T. J. Hancock, died Dec. 3-1864 Henretta Emeline Hancock died August the 3rd 1900 Age 60 years 6 monthsand 21 days. From the "Marriages" record page (not in my possession), Emelin Hollomon& Thomas J. Handcok [Hancock] was maried July the 28th 1857. From a"lined paper" page inserted in the bible: T. J. Hancock and Heneretta E.Hollomon was joined in holy state of Matrimony July the 28th 1859. So wehave conflicting dates for their marriage. I will enter the date from thebible record page, 1857. JRH JRH Children of THOMAS HANCOCK and HENRIETTA HOLLOMAN are: i. LAURA4 HANCOCK, b. April 09, 1861, Crawford County, Georgia; d.October 05, 1928, Crawford County, Georgia. ii. THOMAS JACKSON HANCOCK, b. 1865, Crawford County, Georgia; d.September 18, 1873, Crawford County, Georgia. Notes for THOMAS JACKSON HANCOCK: On a loose Bible Record page inserted into the John Hatcher, Jr. Bibleunder the heading "Deaths" is the name Thomas Hancock, died Sep. 18,1878. I don't know whether this is the same Thomas Hancock, son of ThomasJackson and Henrietta Holloman Hancock or not. The next entry is: T. J.Hancock, died Dec. 3, 1864 who was Thomas's father, so it is most likelythat the first entry IS that of Thomas Hancock, Jr. JRH ------- From Allen Craig: ID: I8 Name: Rachael HANCOCK Sex: F Birth: 1826 in GEORGIA,USA Census: _ALT_BIRTH: Y 1850 Sumpter Co,Ga _RIN: 825 1 Death: 13 MAY 1911 in Meigs,Thomas Co,Ga of Natural Causes Burial: 13 MAY 1911 City Cementary,Meigs,Thomas,Ga Census: 1850 Sumpter Co,Ga _RIN: 825 1 Census: 1870 Andersonville,Sumter,GA,USA _RIN: 2286 2 Note: 1 _UID 8C5F6DB29831D511A09630C258C10000FA1E Lenora Callie GRANT ALLEN said Rachael was 1/2 Indain & she lived 80years. _RIN: 1 3 Change Date: 16 FEB 2002 at 21:09:30 Father: Clement HANCOCK b: 1785 in Warren Co.,GA.,USA Mother: Temperance JACKSON b: <1800> in Ga Marriage 1 Thomas Jefferson GRANT b: 27 MAR 1812 in GA USA Married: 27 JUN 1839 in Crawford Co.,GA.,USA Note: 1 _UID 8A5F6DB29831D511A09630C258C10000F8FE 3 Children Charles C.
