Note: 1 Oct 1796. Samuel's children do not appear in the vital records of Barre or Leyden. The 1800 census in Leyden, MA shows 1 male <18, 1 male 26-45, 1 female <18, 1 female 26-45. Bethuel or Ira born 1798-1800, Samuel 28, Elizabeth 3 and Priscilla 27. In the Barre land valuation records there is a Samuel that appears in 1803 and is there every year until 1815. Next I sent for the tax valuation records from Barre and found the following information: FHL film # 0859259 items 5 and 6: There is a Samuel Rice that appears for the first time in 1803 Date Name House Acres Land Personal Value Value 1803 Samuel Rice 1 12 $70 $45 1804 Samuel Rice 1 59 $350 $60 1805 Sam'l Rice 1 59 $350 $97 1806 Sam'l Rice 1 59 $350 $95 1807 Samuel Rice 1 59 $350 $95 1808 Sam'l Rice 1 59 $350 $95 Sam'l Rice Guardian 1 14 $85 Nath Withwell Sam'l Rice do - 13 $85 Israel Sam'l Rice do - 14 $85 Dan Sam'l Rice do - 16 $85 Isrealiot [??] 1809 Sam'l Rice 1 59 $350 $120 Sam'l Rice Guad - For N. In 1810 residents of each district are listed. There is one other Rice listed in District 18 - Phineas Rice. The entry for District No 18 reads as: Beginning at Schoolhouse No 7 - Thence by John Walks, Gardner Ruggles to Hardwick lane, also Phinehas Rices & Jonathan Child to ________can't read__________ Also by Denison Robinson to edward Woods onto the County Road also Ebenezer Johnson containing the following houses and these estates. Dean Babbit The Thoce Boydous (sp - can't read) Phinehas Rice Sam'l Rice John Ames John P Ames David Allen Jonahtan Childs Benja Stone Zacherus Atwood (sp) Bernadus Atwood John Wallis John Andover Farm Gardner Ruggles Benedam Robinson Noah White Elizabeth Hoce Thos Attwood Adam Hary Elijah Robinson Edward Wood. [ I wonder if the name Gardner came from the neighbor Gardner Ruggles ???] In the Barre vital records we find that Phinehas Rice died 24 Feb 1814, a. 44 y. Barre marriages Phinehas Rice m. Betsy Jonson of Danna, int. 3 Nov 1801. In the 1813 tax valuation Phinehas had 55 acres valued at $295 in the same position that Samuel shows up in 1814 with the same acres and value. I would guess from this that Samuel and Phineas are brothers. The 1810 census has Samuel in Barre, MA [ <10,10-16, 16-26, 26-45, 45+ ] Sam'l Rice 31011-01011 Bethuel or Ira 10-12 Horace 8 Gardner 6 Ira or Bethuel 0-5 Samuel 38 Male >45 Elizabeth 13 Priscilla 37 Female > 45 There is a Samuel B. or Samuel Rice that served in the War of 1812 in the VT Militia from Guilford, VT. Guilford is just to the north of Leyden, MA. This Samuel served under Captain Luke Parson's Company, Col. Jonathan Williams' Regiment. His service was 2 months and 13 days during 1812. His pension certificate is number 9969. 27 Dec 1812 Samuel and Priscilla are baptized at the First Church of Barre Found in the Record Book 1 of the First Church of Barre 1767-1845 - rebound by Henry Hill of Worcester in 1856 in possession of the Barre Historical Society. 25 Jul 1813 all five children are baptized: with the boys in the order Bethuel, Horace, Gardner, Ira. The girl is entered as Betsy. Samuel appears in the Ashtabula Co property tax records starting in 1817 with land originally owned by E. White. Land that was first owned by Samuel was owned in later years by Horace, Elizabeth and Gardner Rice showing that they were all related in some way.
