Note: is father about 1817. He married Francis there 19 Aug 1830. Sometime bet 1843 and 1849 he moved to Oregon, WI. My guess is that it was in 1849 since he bought 40 acres in Dane Co, Section 3, Township 5N Range 9E for $50 on 29 Jul 1848, which was signed for 1 Jan 1850. The township is located on the southern border of Dane Co and the northeast corner of Green Co. In the 1850 census his worth is $750. Written in pencil in a book in the Western Reserve Historical Society Library is ap Ira Rice, I believe this means that Ira made the application for Gardner's marriage license. This is probably an older brother. The state of Wisconsin has no record of Gardner's death certificate. Sandra Falter sdfalter@hotmail.com on the internet shows Gardner born about 1790 in CT and married Frances Tourgee (born 1808). In the 1820 Census Samuel Rice is listed in Kingsville: Males: 1 10-16, 1 16-18, 2 16-26, 1 over 45 Females: 1 0-10, 1 16-26, 2 over 45 3 engaged in agriculture. The 1830 Census shows: Samuel Rice in Kingsville Males: 1 50-60 Females: 1 15-20, 1 30-40, 1 50-60 In 1835 free white males over 21 in Kingsville: Ira and Gardner Rice The 1840 Census shows Samuel in Kingsville as: Males: 1 60-70 Females: 1 60-70 1 engaged in farming. In 1840 Gardner Rice in Kingsville as: Males: 2 under 5, 1 5-10, 1 30-40 Females: 2 5-10, 1 15-20, 1 30-40 1 engaged in farming. In 1843 free white males: Gardner and Sam___ Rice In 1850 Samuel in Kingsville as: Samuel 78 born in MA Corinna 78 born in CT In 1850 Gardner is listed in Oregon, WI as: Gardner 45 b MA Farmer value of land $750 Francis 43 b CT Orson E. 19 OH Farmer Attended school Julliett M. 17 OH Attended school Elizabeth 16 OH Attended school W. Rice with 80 acres being the W 1/2 of the SE 1/4 of Section 3 of Oregon Twp. About 1 1/2 miles west of the town of Oregon. The only records showing that Gardner was born in MA are the census records and the death certificate of one of his daughters. The death certificate of one of his sons shows Gardner's birthplace as VT. Gardner appears in an 1827 list of Kingsville Twp inhabitants found in the Western Reserve Historical Society Manuscript Collection #2065, Container 1, Folder 1 - "List of names of the white male inhabitants in the County of Ashtebula, of the age of twenty one years and upwards, taken by law A. 1827; arranged under the heads of their respective townships" Gardner Rice appears in Kingsville Twp, Ashtabula, OH personal property tax records starting in 1829 (Horace and Gardner Rice were taxed on 5 cattle) and every year from then until 1835. He is not listed in the 1820 or 1830 census but there is someone of the appropriate age to be him in the Samuel Rice household in 1820 and the Horace Rice household in 1830. Gardner had both personal property and real estate property on the Ohio 1835 Tax Duplicate List in Kingsville Twp. He also appears in Kingsville Twp real estate tax records starting in 1833, although the first land record found for him is in March 1836 when he and his wife purchased 44 acres in Kingsville Twp from Mr. Whelpey. The property was sold in February 1848 probably in preparation for their move to Wisconsin. There is an Ira Rice that appears on the application for Gardner's marriage license but there is no further record of Ira. In the Graveyard where Gardner is buried there are 8 graves in the Lot. They contain: Gardner, Francis, Mary E., Louis G and George D in the same grave, 5 and 6 have unmarked burials, 7 is vacant and 8 has Fidelia. Horace Rice is probably Gardner's brother. Horace was married 30 Nov 1830 to Chloe Crowell. He moved to Mentor, Lake, OH where he appears in the 1850 census as: Horace Rice 57 farmer b. MA land valued at $1000 Chloe 36 b. NY Amos 18 b. OH farmer, attended school Emery 11 b OH (m) attended school Julia 8 b OH attended school Sarah J 5 b OH John 1 b OH In 1860 the family appears this way: Horace Rice 57 b MA farmer, land valued $5000, personal property $1000 Cloe 46 b NY Emery 20 b OH Juliett 17 b OH attended school Sarah 14 b OH attended school Sarina 9 b OH attended school The 1870 Census shows Horace Rice 68 Farmer $3250, $300 b NY??? and a housekeeper Sarah Ames 24. He is still living in Mentor. An 1874 plat map shows land of H. Rice in Land Tract 17 #4 47.1? Acres. The land is straight north of the town of Mentor and about 1 mile south of the lake. There is only one property to the north and there are no houses shown on the property. I couldn't find a house any where else in the county. There is also no road shown leading to the property so I am not sure how access was obtained. There is no entry shown for Horace in the 1880 census. He was probably living with one of his children. I looked for an Emery or Amos in the 1880 census but it appears that there were no entries in Ohio for either one. Unfortunately that means he was probably living with one of his daughters so its a little harder to find him. The Mentor Center Cem in Lake Co, OH has gravestones for Horace Rice 1802-1889 and Chloe Rice 1814-1867.
