Note: rom Waterman in DeKalb County, Illinois. Luman was enrolled at North Central College in Naperville, IL for the fall term of 1876 along with his sister Eva. He was registered as C. L. Whitford and he was 18 at the time. I would guess that this implies that he had finished high school which would be quite unusual for a farm family at that time. This shows the importance that the Whitford family placed on education. Source: 1873-1877 enrollment book North Central College. Charles was listed in the 1860 and 1870 census living with his parents in DeKalb County and then in 1880 he was listed as Luman as he had decided to use his middle name rather than his first name and still living with his parents. This was the case for the rest of his life and it would be interesting to know why he decided to make this change. Luman was married to Mary Ellen Huff in 1885 and the notice in the newspaper read: "WHITFORD-HUFF in the town of Victor, at residence of the bride's parents Mr & Mrs Wilson Huff 26 April 1885 by Rev. Hicks. C. L. Whitford & Mary E. Huff." By their 15th year of marriage they were well established on a farm in Clinton Township. They had 6 children by that time and the two oldest children were attending school but Viletta, who was 9 years old at the time had not started yet. 1900 census Clinton Twp, DeKalb, IL ED 2, Sheet 9 Luman C.
