Note: In a letter written in 1875. "My brother Hugh (my older by some six years) married at Genev Caroline Bours, daughter of the late P. Bours, Esq. and is now living at Stockton CA.... In Sept 1865 I left Geneva and sailed via Panama for California, arriving at San Francisco in Oct. and proceeded at once to Stockton. In 1866 I was married to Elizabeth Robinson Stowe (grand-daughter of P. Bours mentioned above, niece of my brother's wife and of B.W. Bours Esq. of Stockton. Edward was a student at Hobart College. When he was in Michigan at the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Fourth Michigan Volunteers 20 June 1861 in Company A. He was promoted to Sargent Major of the regiment on 1 June 1863 and was mustered out after Lee's surrender on 28 June 1864 in Detroit. He wrote home faithfully and his Civil War letters are in the archives at the Clements Library at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. Shortly after the war he went to the Pacific Coast. On July 26 1866 re registered to vote in the first ward of Stockton, CA listing his occupation as Book Keeper. He finally became and for many years was Freight and Traffic Auditor of the Northern Pacific Railroad. "TAYLOR, Edward Henry Courtney.
