Note: 1855 NY Census of Seneca, Ontario, NY shows: Hugh Dobbin 89 b Westchester Co in Seneca 20 yrs Farmer, brick house $2000 Louisa Dobbin 45 b Seneca Co Dau in Seneca 20 yrs Note that this house is 3 away from Peter Bours. Hugh Woodruff Dobbin moved to the foot of Seneca Lake, near Geneva about 1797. In the war of 1812 he was Lieutenant Colonel of the New York Volunteers (2nd and 18th Regiments.) On account of meritorious service, he was brevetted Brigadier General. A letter written to Hugh from his wife dated 24 Nov 1812: "My Dear, I adress you with this Letter and I hope it will meet your approbation - if not I shall Rely wholly on your honour to pardon me - in the first place Some weeks ago Capt Kendig Called his Company to geather and Seemed very spirited said if his men would volenteer he would stand ready to go whenever Called on and William voltnteered amongst the Rest about thirty in all But when the proclamation of Genl Smyth Came on the most Sentimental Language that ever was heard we thought that the Capt would call out his men imedately William withed four Days But very impatiently for orders But none came he intended to go he then took one of the handbills and went to his House to know if he inteded to go he said he should not put himself under U S officers I felt so provoked when I heard what he said that I belieave had it been in my power he sould not held a Commission one hour in the State and William was Eager for going and said the invitation was to single ones as well as Companys and when your Letter to the officers of the County of Seneca and your Regiment Came on here Impressed with your Sentiments of the warmest zeal for your Country and your ardent wishes for them to be Sperited to come forward and be pertakers in your Toils My Dear I could say Nothing against my Sons going I only wish the Lord had a Blessed me with as many sons as he has Daughters and they was old enough to bare arms i would freely send them all to your asistance in such an enterresting Cause oh My Dear I feel greatly agetated as the Time draws nigh that you Expect to Cross my thoughts and Emmotions I Cannot Describe to you - my Earnest prayers for your Safety and the Lord protect you give you the victory over your Enemies and hope you Rear and maintain the american Sandard in Canada - it is about 2oclock this morning whilst the family is all a Sleep that this Letter is wrote I shall onely trust you to the Care of Lord Jesus and Subscribe myself most Dutyfull wife tell Death-- Margaret Dobbin" William Woodruff volunteered in Nov 1812. War department reports his service commenced 14 Jan 1814 and ended 19 Apr 1814.
