a. Note:   chool teacher, silo salesman and real estate agent during his lifetime. He attended Valparaiso University for two of four 12-week terms in 1906-07, according to the student register of that year. He was enrolled in the Civil Engineering course. Laiman(sic) C. Whitford is listed as his parent. "A unique university even at that time, Valparaiso was geared to provide a practical education in the
 shortest possible time at the lowest possible cost. Classes were in
 session year-round. Literacy and debating societies took place of
 intercollegiate athletics and fraternal organizations. Depending on the
 course of study, one could graduate in one or two years. If Manley
 participated in boxing, it was intramural and off the record." Source:

 21 Feb 1997. Manley was an expert hunter and kept meat on the table during the depression by shooting small game. He also had an excellant melon patch with melons that he bred that the family was able to sell and trade for gas to be able to drive their car during the depression.

  Manley moved his family to Minnesota about 1916 to try to improve his farming land but in 1920 and 1921 drought caused the family to have no crops at all and he lost the farm. He moved back to Illinois where he rented farm land.
