Edgefield SC, Sept. 15 - A great and sad event has happened in Edgefield, an event that will fill Edgefield throughout all its length and breadth with deepest sorrow and mourning. This is the death of the universally beloved and unboundedly popular man, Sheriff Wm. H. Ouzts, the brave and maimed old soldier, the friend of everybody, white and black, high and low, rich and poor. Sheriff Ouzts had been sheriff of Edgefield County for 26 years and was invincible at the polls. he died, somewhat unexpectedly, Thursday at midnight. His health had been precarious for some years and as time passed he had suffered more and more with the sore and shattered leg that he brought home from the war 40 years ago. He was a devout member of the Methodist church, and was buried from that church. He is survived by his faithful and noble wife and by six children, Messrs., Joseph, Wiley, and Ollie Ouzts, Mrs. Cheatham, Mrs. Boone, and Mrs. Morgan. William Ouzts, a member of an immense and honor family, with many branches, was born in the McKendree section, 12 miles north of the town of Edgefield, 69 years ago. He came of sturdy old Saxe-Gotha stock and his life from beginning to end was a useful and an exceptionally brave one. His battle of 40 years with his shattered leg, ever bitterly painful and threatening, was a valiant warfare in itself. His funeral called into town hundreds of mourning people from all parts of our county. The State, September16, 1906. Find A Grave Memorial# 67460533
