  When he was only seven, he doned a red shirt and rode in the procession of Red Shirts to help redeem his state from radicalism.
  Growing up on his father's farm and helping with the work, he early became interested in farming. He purchased a part of his grandfather Ouzts' estate and built his home there, A successful farmer and a good businessman. So well was his farm cultivated that a neighbor looking over his fields, said to Hortense Woodson (the Ouzts book writer) "Mr.
 Ouzts' farm is starched and ironed".
