Looked after the interests of the Epworth Orphanage. Adopted Pearl Bouknight from the orphanage. Edgefield SC - Mrs. Leila Ouzts Shaffer, beloved resident of Edgefield county, died Tuesday afternoon at her home in the McKendree section of the county. She was stricken Saturday with a cerebral hemorrhage. Mrs. Shaffer, the daughter of the late James Talbert and Amina Frances Ouzts, was born October 18, 1873, at Elmwood plantation home in Edgefield county. She was married on November 12, 1891, to Joseph M. Shaffer. He preceded her in death in 1924. She was a devoted member of the McKendree Methodist church and was an outstanding leader in its activities. For 25 years she was pianist for the church, and for many years she was in charge of instructing the children of the church in its annual Children’s Day activities, held each year the third Sunday in June. Mrs. Shaffer, representative of a fading era, was a gentle woman of many fine characteristics - traits that endeared her to a host of friends and gained for her the respect of her community. She is survived by an adopted daughter, Mrs. Pearl Bouknight Dorn of Greenwood; three sisters, Miss Flora Ouzts, who shared the home with her; Mrs. Eugenia Herrin of Lockhart, Mrs. Beulah Harling of Edgefield; one brother, Albert Ouzts of Elmwood, and several nieces and nephews, including Mrs. Marjorie Asbill and Mrs. Charles H.
