The Edgefield Advertiser, 1938 Death of Mrs, Parkman. A long and beautiful life was brought to an earthly close last Friday when Mrs. Manassas Hamilton Parkman, widow of the late Marion Norris Parkman, passed away in Edgefield at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Gertie Butler, after a long illness that was borne with Christian fortitude, a characteristic that helped her endure the trials of life in a way that caused loved ones and friends to marvel. After being informed of her death the thought occured to me: "She now has been called to receive the reward she so richly deserves." Manassas Hamilton was a member of an old and honored family and throughout the years never forgot the heritage that was hers, always striving to implant in the minds of her children and grandchildren that their lives must not only be a credit to their own family but to their community as well. Being a descendant of the Ouzts family it was her delight to mingle with her kinsmen at the annual Ouzts reunions that are held at McKendree church. She rarely missed attending one of these associations. Mrs. Parkman was the daughter of the late William Hamilton and the late Mary Ann Ouzts Hamilton. Her father was a soldier in the Civil war and after coming home for a while after having fought in the Battle of Manassas to see his infant daughter he decided to name her for the battle in which he had recently fought. In his way a beautiful and historic name became linked with a beautiful character. While yet a young woman she was married to Marion Parkman, who preceeded her to the grave several years ago. The reared a family of five children, all of whom survives: Mrs. Foster LaGroon of near Limestone; Mrs. Gertie Butler of Edgefield; Mrs. Jessie Pardue of Greenwood; Julian Parkman of Bishopville and Tom Parkman of Edgefield. A numbe of grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive. The deceased was for many years a member of Mountain Creek church and was a faithful and devoted church worker as long as her health permitted. The large crowd who gathered at her funeral and the many floral offerings were mute evidence of the regard in which she was held. A number of Edgefield friends attended the funeral and some of them assisted with the singing.
