Note: N22783 Honea Path man dies in hot car at roadside By Kelly Davis - Independent-Mail - 7/30/99 - IVA - A Honea Path man's heat-related death Wednesday appears to be the first in Anderson County to join a tragic wave of loss due to stifling temperatures across the country. Robert "Bob" Wheeler, 43, of 10703 Belton-Honea Path Highway, died possibly around 1 p.m or 1:30 p.m. while sitting in the driver's seat of his 1986 Chevrolet Camaro on the shoulder of SC 413 near Iva, Anderson County Deputy Coroner Charlie Boseman said. A wheel on the car had apparently blown out, he said. A passer-by discovered Mr. Wheeler around 5:30 p.m. The tinted driver's side window was rolled up, so other drivers might have thought the car was unoccupied, Mr. Boseman said. The passenger side window was rolled down and Mr. Wheeler had removed his shirt, Mr. Boseman said. He said Mr. Wheeler's body temperature was 105.6 degrees when he arrived at the scene around 6:30 p.m. An autopsy confirmed heat as the cause of death, Mr. Boseman said. A brother, Sonny Wheeler of Honea Path, said Mr. Wheeler, who worked at Medical Textiles of Greenwood, was generous and enjoyed fishing. "He'd do anything he could for anybody," he said. "He was a fine fellow and was appreciated by everybody." He said Thursday was Mr. Wheeler's 43rd birthday. Mr. Wheeler also is survived by his parents, Robert O. and Hassie Elizabeth Ouzts Wheeler. He was unmarried and had no children. The Greenville News - Bob Wheeler, Honea Path Robert Wayne "Bob" Wheeler, 43, of 10703 Belton-Honea Path Highway, died July 28, 1999.
