Note: The Colton Courier Colton, California Thursday, September 24, 1959 Page 1 Lois W. Evans Dies Following Extended Illness Funeral services for Mrs. Lois W. Evans, 65, prominent Colton businesswoman, civic leader and mother of Gene Evans, Hollywood celebrity and movie star, will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at Knopsnyder's Mortuary. Interment will follow at Montecito Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Evans, who resided at 935 North 7th St., died yesterday at Community Hospital following an extended illness. She was hospitalized Saturday for a lung infection and died of pulmonary pneumonia according to her doctor. Born in North Vernon, Ind., Mrs. Evans and her husband, Thorne O. Evans, came to Colton 37 years ago. They owned and operated Evans Market on 7th St. for the past 32 years. Active in many social clubs in Colton, Mrs. Evans was a member of Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary and Colton Business and Professional Women's Club, and Presbyterian Church. Survivors include her husband, Thorne O.; two sons, Gene B. and Alfred C., both of Colton; three sisters, Helene Crater of Columbus, Ind., Doris Harris of Bedford, Ind., and Corinne Landreth of Pendleton, Ore.; and two brothers, Virgil Williams of North Vernon and Vernon Williams of Indianapolis, Ind. *** The Tribune Seymour, Indiana Friday, September 25, 1959 Page 4 Native of Jennings County Succumbs Mrs. Lois Mildred Evans, 65, native of Jennings County, former Bedford resident and mother of Gene Evans, of Hollywood, movie and television star, died Wednesday in the Community Hospital at San Bernardino, Calif. Funeral services will be conducted at Colton, Calif. She was a graduate of the former Central Normal College and Franklin College. Other survivors besides the son include the husband, Thorn O. Evans; one other son, Alfred Evans, of Colton; three sisters, Mrs. Corinne Landreth, of Pendleton, Ore., Mrs. Helene Crater, of Columbus, and Mrs. Doris Harris, of Bedford, and two brothers, Virgil E. Williams, of Vernon and Vernon H. Williams, of Indianapolis. *** Times Mail Bedford, Indiana Bedford, Indiana Newspaper 1959 MRS EVANS MOTHER OF ACTOR, DIES Mrs. Lois Mildred Evans 65, former Bedford resident died Wednesday afternoon at the Community Hospital in San Bernardino, Calif. Mrs. Evans was born in Jennings County, Ind., Jun 4, 1894, the daughter of Smith V. and Frances Holsclaw Williams. She moved to Bedford with her parents while a girl and her father operated a greenhouse at Eighth and O Streets. She married Thorne O. Evans in Bedford Nov. 29, 1923. Mr. Evans formerly resided on Lincoln Avenue, but grew up in the Springville neighborhood. He was in the coal business with his father Len, for several years. After Mr. and Mrs. Evans were married, they moved to California, pausing for a short time on the was and settled in Colton, Calif. where Mr. Evans operated a market. BORN IN CALIFORNIA Gene Evans, destined to become famous in movies and television was born after the couple moved to California. Mrs. Evans is survived by the husband; two sons, Gene of Hollywood and Alfred of Colton; three sisters, Mrs. Corinne Landreth of Pendelton, Oregon. Mrs. Helene Crater of Columbus, Ind. and Mrs. Doris Harris of Bedford and two brothers, Virgil Williams of Vernon, Ind. and Vernon H. Williams of Indianapolis. Mrs. Evans was a graduate of Central Normal College at Danville and Franklin College. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of at Colton. Funeral services will be held Friday at the Kopfer Funeral Home in Colton with burial in the Colton Cemetery.
