Note: Newspaper Article: March 15, 1960 Greenbrier Countain Observes Anniversary RONCEVERTE - Henry L. Ballengee celebrated his 94th birthday anniversary at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Mae Seal, on Walnut Hill, with whom he resides. Born at Greenville, then known as Centerville, in Monroe County, March 10, 1866, He is the son of the late John M. and Sara Ann Garten Ballengee, and the youngest of a family of four children. Ballengee spent his early years on the farm lending to the support of the family in the absence of his father who died when he was six years old. Ballengee married the former Miss Laura Kincaid of Alderson Dec. 18, 1886, when he was 20 years old. He then left the farm and moved to Layland, Fayette County, where he received employment in the mines as a carpenter. Ballengee worked for 40 years in the mines of Fayette and Raleigh counties. He, living at Ansted at the time, worked in the relief crews helping with the rescue work at the Red Ash explosion which he remembers occurred March 6, 1900, in which more than 100 men were killed. Ballengee is a veteran of the Spanish-American War, having enlisted at Kanawha City. He served in Georgia, Tennessee and South Carolina, and attained the rank of corporal. He also was awarded the sharpshooter medal which he is still proud to display. In referring to the heavy snows we are having, he remembers well the snow Dec. 17, 1890, and contends the winters we have no-a-days hardly compare with the winters in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Although his hearing is impaired, Ballengee has unusually keen eyesight and enjoys watching television, the ball games in particular, as well as doing lots of reading, card playing, and other indoor entertainment. A lifelong Baptist, Ballengee is a member of the Ronceverte Baptist Church which he attends regularly when the weather permits. Ballengee, whose wife died several years ago, has one son, Ed of Danese, 15 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great grandchildren. A daughter, Mrs E. J.
