  Confederate Civil War records state: James Buckland first enlisted 22 Aug 1861, in R. G. Lively's Virginia Militia as a Private. James Buckland took the amnesty oath on 20 Jan 1865, in Charleston, West Virginia, having served with Thurmond's Company or Hounsehll's Battalion of the Virginia Cavalry as a Private. Also called Partisan Rangers or Thurman's Bushwackers. Height: 5 feet, 9 inches. Age: 43. Complexion: dark. Eyes: brown. Hair: black.
  Occupation: farmer.
  James Buckland owned numerous tracts of land in Summers County. The first parcel he bought was on 18 Dec 1848 - 22-1/2 acres on the South Side of theGreenbrier River, from Reuben and Sarah Siers. He received 95 acres on the Greenbrier River by Land Grant in 1854 (Monroe Survey Book 4, Page 82); 45 acres on Big Creek by Land Grant on 2 Jun 1862 (Monroe Survey Book 4, Page 205). After his death, deeds were recorded for 283 acres of his land on Big Creek to his son, Raiburn W. Buckland; 27 acres on Big Creek to his son, John J.Buckland; and 106 acres on Big Creek to his son, Peter M. Buckland.
