Note: North Vernon Banner North Vernon, Jennings County, Indiana October 29, 1890 DEMOCRATIC TICKET REPUBLICAN TICKET PROHIBITION TICKET For County Recorder HENRY A. HERRING, LEWIS C. HUCKLEBERRY, GEORGE RODGERS LEWIS C. HUCKLEBERRY, the jolly, good looking candidate for Recorder, is a native of this county. He is one of the men who has followed agricultural pursuits all his life for a livelihood. He is just the man to place upon the records of this County anything which requires recording. When Fort Sumpter was fired upon, and the National flag insulted, his love of country, like those of many others, prompted him to go to its rescue, and with the magnificent armies of Grant and Sherman, he fought his part until rebellion, that serpent which wrought sorrow throughout the Great Republic, was subdued. He is well qualified to fill the office to which he is an aspirant and when the returns of the vote shall have been made and officially announced, he will be wearing the prefix, "Recorder Huckleberry". Also Mr. L. C. Huckleberry, of Campbell township, and we would not mention the fact that Lou ought to invest $2.50 in a certain kind of license to be had at the Clerk's office, if we were not well acquainted with him. Call again friends. *** Banner Plain Dealer April 3, 1901 Lewis Huckleberry has filed an application for the position of rural mail carrier on Route 1, that will probably be established in this county by the 15th of this month. The position pays $500 per annum. *** Copy of a letter written in the year 1917 by Lewis C. Huckleberry to his nephew James Hamilton Huckleberry from North Vernon, Indiana on April 17, 1917, in the possession of Florence Briddle (daughter of James Hamilton Huckleberry) residence A Street, Bakersfield, Calif. January 26, 1965 My Dear Nephew: I will endeavor to give you what I know of our Ancestors, I have two accounts that do not exactly agree. The first one my grandfather Martin Huckleberry related to me before he died in 1852 aged 95. He says his great-grandfather came from a town in Germany called Wisenburg, landed in Philadelphia about 1755 or possible 1757, settled in a place in Pennsylvania called Conogocheag. There his grandfather grew to manhood and married a woman by the name of Roxann Wise and moved to a town called Beesontown now called Union Town. Lived there about 18 years where great-grandfather died. His name was Benjamin. He thinks he was a widower when he came to this country. Our Grandfather moved to Kentucky to a place called Abbotts Station near where Louisville now is about year 1797. He mentions no soldiers in the family until the Indian war following. The other account I have I get from a book by a very distant relative named Mrs. Emma Epler Knudson published by Illinois State Journal Co. at Springfield, Ill. It would give you much information. She says Benjamin with three children landed at Baltimore sometime in 1700 and were so poor had to be sold for their passage. The children were named Frederick, George and Elizabeth. When Fredericks time expired for the passage money he married and moved to Lexington, Indiana where he died at the age of 114 years old. George married at Hagerstown, Maryland and moved to Union Town, Fayette Co, PA. She says George Huckleberry served in the Revolutionary War from Westmoreland County, PA. If you would send to publishing house you would get much information. Now as to the Prather brach. I do not know which only that my grandmother Prather told me. I do not know the date of her birth, she died in 1862 or 1863. She was born and raised at or near Fincastle, Botetourt County, VA. Her maiden name was Littice McKibben. Her fathers name was William McCarrell. She often told me he was an officer in the Virginia Line. My grandmother was a very superior woman no doubt. Will Prather can give you better account of the Prathers. I think he takes pride in studying out the genealogy of the family. My son Will is a clerk in the War Department. He might be in a position to give you information. This is all I know of the families. We are all in good health. I am still driving the rural mail. Warren is a florist and doing very well. Will in Washington, DC. Silas mail clerk from Cincinnati to St. Louis. Bertha teacher in the city schools and Laura a trained nursed in Chicago. I would like very much to have you and family visit us at anytime and I would like to go with you once again along the banks of the Muscatasuck after the wiley bass. Write us whenever you can. L. C.
