Note: o in Real Estate Business. **** The Bedford Daily Mail Bedford, Indiana 14 December 1918 Death Of McClure Smith Of Double Pneumonia Is Shock To Community At Large. FUNERAL TO BE MONDAY McClure Smith, representative citizen, passed away this morning at two o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ethel Harris, North J street, with double pneumonia super induced by influenza which he contracted a week ago Friday while in Shoals having been called there by the fatal illness of his sister, Mrs Ingeby Shrum. McClure Smith was born January 2, 1859 to Mr. and Mrs. Thorton Smith, pioneers of Martin County. He was reared there and became on of the influential farmers near Shoals. He moved his family to this city fourteen years ago and was in employment at the mills for some time, later engaging in the cab business. Ten years ago he went into the jewelry business on East Sixteenth street which he conducted successfully until a year when he disposed of his interest to his son. He was a man of sterling worth and was highly regarded in the business life. He was affiliated with the L. O. O. M. He has a pleasing personality and was gental and pleasant. For the past year he had served the county as constable and was favorably known throughout the county. He was married to Mary I Barker at Dover Hill thirty seven years ago and to them was born a large family only one of whom, Walter has passed on. Surviving are the wife and eight children Clyde Smith of Decatur, Ill, Mrs Ethel Harris, Ralph N., Pulaski E. and Mrs Addie Rayburn of this city. Mrs Ida M. Clifton of shoals, Hobart Smith of Linton and Fred W. Smith of Indianapolis. Ezra Smith of West Union, Mrs Sarah Simpson of Coalmount, Mrs. Mary Mason and Mrs. Theodore Holz of Dover Hill are brother and sister of the deceased. Services will be held Monday afternoon at two o'clock at the Smith home, 6th and J street by the Rev Toole. Internment will be made at Green Hill. **** PNEUMONIA IS FATAL -W.S.S.- McClure SMITH DIED THIS MORNING AT 2 O'CLOCK ILL ABOUT TWO WEEKS Funeral Sunday Afternoon 2 O'clock Burial at Green Hill McClure Smith, aged 59 years, 11 months and 12 days, died this morning at 2 o'clock at his home at north J street from bronchial pneumonia that developed following an attack of influenza. He contracted the influenza while in Martin county where he went December 2nd to see his sister, Mrs. Ingeby Shrum who was critically ill and died a day or two later. Returning here on December 6th following her funeral he was compelled to take to his bed and pneumonia developed almost immediately, since which time he has been in a critical condition with little hope being entertained for his recovery. The deceased was born in Martin County on January 2nd, 1859 and was reared there. In 1883 he was united in marriage in that county to Miss Mary I. Baker and to their union nine children were born, eight of whom with the widow survive. One son Walter, met death in an accident at the local Southeastern shops in 1905. The children surviving are Clyde Smith, of Decatur, Ill.,; Mrs Ida Clifton, Martin county; Fred Smith, of Indianapolis; Hobert Smith, of Linton; Mrs. Ethel Harris, Ralph and Pulaski E. Smith, and Mrs. brother, Ezra Smith, of martin county and three sisters, Mrs. Killion Holtz, and Mrs. Mary Mason, of Martin county and Mrs Sarah Simpson of Coalmont, also survive. Mr. Smith with his family, moved to Bedford in 1904 and had since been a resident here. In 1911 he entered the jewelry business here and has since been on of our most. past year he has also been engaged in the real estate business as a partner of John L. Smith. He was a member of the First Methodist Episcopal church and fraternally was connected with the Loyal Order of Moose. Funeral services will be conducted from the late residence Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock by Rev. R. H. Toole, pastor of the First Methodist church and burial will be in Green Hill cemetery. **** The home of Mr. and Mrs. McClure Smith was the scene Monday of a pleasant family gathering, as they entertained their children and families as is their usual custom on Christmas with a fine turkey dinner. FATHER BURIED MONDAY The McClure Smith family are deluged with sorrow and trouble. Mr. Smith who succumbed to influenza Friday was laid away Monday afternoon and when the family return to home they found a message awaiting them that the daughter, Mrs. Ida Clifton of Shoals was at the point of death with influenza, and "was just waiting to see her mother." Mrs. Smith accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Harris and James Clifton left immediately for Shoals and found her very low but conscious.
