McCLURE SMITH Underwent Operation for Gall Stones This Morning Mrs. McClure Smith submitted to an operation at the Dunn hospital this morning for gall stones. She was taken suddenly ill at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ollie Rayburn, West 21st st street, early this morning and as soon as her touble had been diagnosed by her family physician was rushed to the hospital. The operation was performed by Drs. Pearson, Byers and Ragsdale and the patient is reported doing nicely this afternoon. A change for the worse was noted early this morning when her heart action weakened and it was thought for several hours that she would pass away at any moment. Later in the day her condition showed slight improvement but she is still dangerously ill. ---- o ------ P.E. and Ralph Smith and Bernard Williams returned home from Cincinnati this morning where they had been on business, the Messrs. SMITH SUCCUMBS AT DUNN HOSPITAL FOLLOWING OPERATION FOR GALL STONES FUNERAL SUNDAY 2:30 Highly Respected Lady Expired Wednesday Afternoon at 3 O'clock Mrs. Mary I. Smith Aged 59 years, 11 months and 29 days, widow of the late McClure Smith, passed away at the Dunn hospital Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock following an operation for gall stones which she underwent Thursday morning. She had been a sufferer from the above disease for some time and the operation was resorted to in the hope that she might receive permanent relief from her suffering. She withstood the ordeal well and her condition was all that could be expected until early Friday morning when her heart action failed and it was this complication that resulted in her death. She was stricken with the fatal attack May 14th. The deceased was born on May 21, 1861, near Dover Hill, to John and Louisa Barker and had she survived until today would have celebrated the sixtieth anniversary of her birth. She was united in marriage in 1890 to McClure Smith who preceded her to the grave on December 14, 1918, his death being due to pneumonia following an attack of influenza. To their union nine children were born, one of whom, Walter E., preceded the mother to the grave. The surviving children are Clyde C. Smith of Decatur, Ill,; Mrs. Ethel Harris, Ralph N. Smith, P. E. Smith, Mrs. Addie Rayburn, of Bedford; Mrs. Ida Clifton, of Shoals; Fred W. and Hobart Smith, of Indianapolis. When but a girl she united with the Shoals Christian church and had since retained membership with this denomination. Funeral services will be conducted from the First Christian church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock by Rev. S. S. Lappin and burial will follow in Green Hill cemetery. *** The Bedford Daily Democrat Bedford, Indiana Monday, May 23, 1921 Page 1 SMITH FUNERAL Largely Attended Sunday Afternoon From Christian Church The funeral of Mrs. McClure Smith, who passed away Friday afternoon at the Dunn hospital, occurred Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the first Christian church and was largely attended. Services were conducted by Rev S. S. Lappin, assisted by Rev. R. H. Toole, a marked tribute of respect being paid the memory of the deceased through their remarks. A quartet composed of Mrs. James F. Stephenson, Mrs. S. S. Lappin, sang a trio of hymns. Pall bearers were Elza Jackson, Bernard Williams, Charles H. Allen, and Frank M. Cosner. Many lovely floral tributes presented by relatives and sorrowing friends were in evidence. The remains were interred in Green Hill cemetery. *** Bedford Daily Mail Bedford, Indiana Monday, May 23, 1921 Page 1 IMPRESSIVE FUNERAL SERVICE The funeral services of Mrs. McClure Smith, who passed away Friday was held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the First Christian church and were very impressively conducted by Rev. S. Sl Lappin, assisted by Rec R.H. Toole. Exquisite flowers in profusion symbols of the regard for the deceased and sympathy for the bereaved ones, covered her bier. A Quartet composed of Mrs. J. H. Stephenson Mrs. S. S. Lappin, Campbell Fields and Rev. Lappin sang favorite hymns. The pall bearers were Albert Fields, Bernard Williams, Elza Jackson, Frank Cosner, C.H. Allen and Logan Browning. Misses Ruth Schmidt, Ruth Pope and Marguerite _____ looked after the flowers. The out of town relatives here for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Smith and children, of Decatur, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Hobert Smith, and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Smith, of Indianapolis; Mr. and Mrs. Clifton, of Shoals; Mrs. Sarah Simpson and Mrs. Anna Cochrane, of Jasonville; Mr. and Mrs. Jap Grafton, Misses Grace and Clare Schrumm, James Clifton, Mrs. Ida Pearce, Mrs. T vis, Misses Eunice and Eunis Gerkin Ros gerkin, Mrs and Mrs. Josh Davis of Shoals; W.C.
