Dorothy Ethel Ferguson, longtime resident of Pharr, died Sunday, November
4, 2001 at the age of 87 in Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen.
Mrs. Ferguson, born in San Antonio as the daughter of Arthur and Edith
Vining Van Dresar, moved at an early age with her family to the Valley,
where she and her two elder brothers attended PSJA High School in the
20's and 30's. After several years' residence in Denton and San Antonio,
she returned to Pharr in the late 40's, where she has resided ever since.
Mrs. Ferguson taught in San Juan and in the Edna Carnahan Elementary
school in Pharr for many years and is fondly remembered by many former
second grade pupils. She was a member of the Pharr United Methodist
Church, the San Juan chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, the
Hidalgo County Retired Teachers' Association, and the La Revista Book
Club and a lifetime member of the Pharr Friends of the Library and the
Texas PTA. Until very recently she worked regularly as a volunteer at
the Pharr Library. She took an active interest in current events and was
an avid reader and solver of crossword puzzles up until very shortly
before her death. She was a faithful friend to a wide circle of
acquaintances and will be sadly missed by them and by her loving family.
Dorothy Ferguson was preceded in death by her first husband, Bernard
Brooks Brown, her two brothers, Donald and Dalton Van Dresar, and, most
recently, by her beloved grandson, Bernard Zondler. She is survived by
her daughter, Patricia Brown Zondler and son-in-law Helmut Zondler of
Bottmingen, Switzerland, three granddaughters, Judith Zondler of Caracas
Venezuela, Ellen Zondler of Basel, Switzerland and Birgit Zondler Reusser
of Ruefenacht, Switzerland, one great-granddaughter, Zora Reusser,
nephews James Van Dresar of La Grange and John Van Dresar of Houston, and
one niece, Joan Roberts of Alberquerque, N.M.
Funeral services are to be held on Thursday, November 8, at 3:00 P.M. in
the chapel of Skinner- Silva Funeral Home in Pharr, followed by a brief
graveside service at Roselawn Cemetery, McAllen. Pallbearers will be
Merwin Beamsley, Norman Burandt, James Gernentz, Harry Kuder, Dennis
Riddle and Albert Schlichter Jr. Honorary pallbearers are Jessie Alanis
and Kenneth Walters. Visitation will be Wednesday from 1:00 P.M. to 8:00
P.M., with family present from 5:00 to 7:00.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of the deceased may be made to
Pharr United Methodist Church or to a favorite charity.
