Note: John Henry, Sr. worked for the railroad as a boilermaker prior to entering the grocery business. He owned and operated Pittman's Grocery in Macon, Ga first on Elm Street beside the railroad near Mercer University, then moved to 1456 Montpelier Ave. at Oakland Ave., and finally in 1958 to Old Jeffersonville Rd. at it's junction with Millerfield Rd. in Cross Keys Area. It was sold in July 1978. John Henry, Jr. came into the business in 1958 and eventually took over the business. JH, Sr. almost always was in the store, even after his retirement. JH, Sr served on the Macon, GA city council for many years during the 1940s and again in the 1970s. He was chairman of the fire committee and was liked by most if not all the firefighters. Note by JHP, Jr: I was told to me by one of the Fire Chiefs at daddy's funeral that "Mr. Pittman was the hardest person to give you a promise of something, but when he did you could count on it."
