a. Note:   John F. Pittman, Jr was a Butcher who would go to a man's field and buy a cow or a steer , kill it, and sell it off his wagon as there was no refrigeration back then.
 He later worked for his son John Henry, Sr at his grocery store.
 Note from J.H. Pittman, Jr: I remember "Pahpah" keeping live chickens in the basement of the store. The store was on Elm St in Macon, GA next to the railroad bridge near Mercer University. The store and the bridge are now gone and Mercer owns the property on the west side of the railroad.
 The women would come to shop (no self service) and go pick out a chicken, which "Pahpah" would kill dress and clean while they bought the other groceries.
  The store stocked flour, sugar, etc by the barrell.
