a. Note:   tte says he was born in England and came to America as a sailor on his uncle's ship. One trip was enough and at 17 years of age, he decided to stay in America and joined his older brother Henry in Philadelpia.
  BIOGRAPHY: Valentine John left Philadelphia when he was 35 years old and headed out west for California in May of 1859. They bought an ox team and provisions for six months and on November 20, he along with his sisters and brother reaching Susanville, wary and worn. They had planned to go to Sacramento, but were stoped by heavy snows and stayed in the Susanville area. He engaged in many different endevers including being the Justice of the Peace. In about 1870 they left the Susanville area and went to Elko Co. Nevada where they were engaged in stock raising and farming. They stayed at White Rock on Silver Creek where he was postmaster and Justice of the Peace. John V. traveled with his son, John S. in his latter years and in 1883 they left Nevada. On 14 Sept 1883 John S. purchased 160 acres of land in Whitman Co. Washington Territory. After Valentine's wife pased away, they sold their 600 acre farm for $12,000 on 5 June 1902 and went back to Susanville.
