a. Note:   Member of Parliament for Sussex County; fought at Agincourt. In command of Sussex troups, captured the castle of Fortenoy in France. Near the close of the 15th century, John was granted the castle, one of the crests of the Barttelot arms. The original arms of the family in England were sable, three sinister falconer's gloves, argent, arranged triangularly, 2 above, 1 below, pendant, bands around the wrist and tassels, gold.
  This John captured the castle of Fontenay in France for which Edward the Black Prince, granted him the castle crest on the Barttelot arms. Lord of the Manor and Patron of the Rectory. M.P. for Cinque Ports 1392. Treasurer and Executor to Thomas the 11th Earl of Arundel and exor. of his will 1415.
