Robert William Etzel enlisted in the United States Navy on April 1, 1944, the day before his 18th birthday. On Dec. 7, 1944 he was assigned to the USS LST-930 which he served on until Dec. 20, 1945. On the USS LST-930 he participated in the invasion of Iwo Jima, from Feb. 19th to 28th 1945, the invasion of Okinawa, from April 1st to 24th 1945, and the capture of Iheya Shima Nansie Shoto in the Ryukyus Group of Islands in Japan from June 3rd to 6th 1945. Dad had told me that his ship discharged troops and then became a hospital ship. His military records show this to be true. At Iwo Jima his ship served as a "Casualty Evacuation Control Ship off Yellow Beach." Again at Okinawa the ship served as a " Casualty Evacuation Control Ship off Purple Beach." At the Ryukyus Group of Islands the ship "discharged cargo and received casualties. On Sept. 15, 1945 this ship was redesignated LST(H)-930 meaning Hospital. He reported for duty aboard the USS APL-31, a hospital ship, on Dec. 20, 1945 and served in the occuation of Yokosuka, Japan from Dec. 20, 1945 to Aptil 8, 1946. He received an Honorable Discharge on June 18, 1946 as a Pharmacist's Mate Third Class and received the following medals: World War 11 Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Medal (2 stars), Philippine Liberation Medal, and the American Theatre Medal.
