  Sometime after the death of his mother in 1914, Joseph, and his brothers and sister, went to live with his mother's family (Uncle and Aunt - James A. and Philomene Comeau) in Church Point, Nova Scotia, for about 3 years. The children returned to Lowell about 1917 and resumed living with their father, first at 24 Canton Street., and then at 101 Warnock Street. (See notes on father.)

  J. William Etzel was very involved in the selling of War Bonds during World War 2. His hobbies included writing, and playing the Violin. Every year on Christmass Eve he played at the midnight church service where his son, Robert, was the Rector.

 "J. William Etzel
 Dies at 66
 Pelham, N.H. - J. William Etzel, 66, of Little Island Pond, died unexpectedly yesterday at the Lowell General Hospital.
 He was born in Charlestown, the son of the late William and Mary (Comeau) Etzel and had formerly lived in Lowell and Chelmsford for many years, before establishing his residence in Pelham, N.H. two years ago. Mr. Etzel had been associated with the Union National Bank of Lowell for over 40 years and at the time of his retirement in 1963 was a vice president and the Trust Officer of that Institution.
 He is survived by his wife, the former Emily B. Fraser; a daughter, Mrs. Charles E. Wright of Chelmsford; a son, Rev. Robert W. Etzel, rector of St Paul's Episcopal church of Lynnfield; a sister, Mrs. Oliver Debes; two brothers, Francis Etzel and Everett Etzel, all of Baltimore, Md., and eight grandchildren.
 A member of All Saints Episcopal church of Chelmsford, Mr. Etzel held membership in William North Lodge, A.F.& A.M. of Lowell; was a 32 degree Mason and was affiliated with the local Scottish Rite Masonic Bodies and the Massachuesetts Consistory. He was a former president of the Lowell Goodwill Industries and a former president of the Lowell Community Concerts. Mr. Etzel was the treasurer of the Old Ladies Home of Lowell; a director of the Battles Home of Lowell; a director of the Lowell YWCA and a member of the quarter century club of the Union National Bank of Lowell."

 "Funeral services for J. William Etzel, of Little Island Pond, Pelham, N.H., retired Vice President and Trust Officer of the Union National Bank, were held at All Saints Episcopal church, Chelmsford, Saturday morning at 10 o'clock.
 The services were conducted by Rev. Paul D. Twelves, Rector of All Saints, and Rev. Robert W. Etzel, son of the late Mr. Etzel and Rector of St. Paul's Episcopal church, Lynnfield.
 The Union National Bank was represted by Homer W. Bourgeois, president; Daniel Walker, vice president; John Egan, vice president; Edward C. Latour, trust officer; Carl Willard, vice president; Harry F. Gienandt, vice president; Herbert Lamprey, asst. vice president; Eric Thomson, asst. trust officer; J. Harold Scott, asst. cashier; George Watson, asst. cashier; Norman Brooks, asst. cashier; Joseph Riley, asst. cashier; Louis Desmarais, asst. auditor; Albert Ludwig, Ralph Knowlton, Paul Shaughnessy, Gertrude Greene, Catherine McQuade, Margaret Amicot and Ann Gaudet.
 Several other Greater-Lowell banking institutions were also represented; as were William North Lodge, A.F.&A.M., together with various other local Scottish Rite Masonic Bodies.
 The Battles Home was represented by Eric Anderson, while Mrs. Earl M. Gary was present from the Lowell Chapter of Grey Ladies of the American Red Cross. The deputation from the Board of Patrons of the Old Ladies Home included; Mrs. Mildred Douglas, Mrs Mildred Walsh, Mrs. Florance Piper, Mrs. Edna Ramsay and Mrs. Esther Ackerley. Mr. and Mrs. Robert P. Hoag and Miss. Adelene Assaly represented the Lowell Goodwill Industries; with Walter E. Clement as delegate from the Board of Trustees of the Lowell Y.W.C.A. Major Bramwell Crawford was present from the Lowell Citadel of the Salvation Army.
 Bearers were W. Earl Cochrane, Wallace R. Gumb, Albert J. Maki, Alfred L. Peterson, Thomas W. Steed and Charles E. Watt.
 Burial took place in Pine Ridge cemetery, Chelmsford."
