Note: is wife and two daughters were buried at Mountanview Cemetery in Oakland (Plot 25, Lot 63, graves a2, a3 and a4), but not Donald/Daniel. The only other person buried in this lot was Lydia Ashton, buried May 11, 1887 in Grave a1 of Plot 25, Lot 63. I can't tell who she was, but there were a couple females named Lydia on Grandmother Grogan's McGowan and Slack side of the family.

"Donald" and Essie (Grogan) McLeod are listed in the 1870 US Census, living in the household of Kenneth and Mary J. (Grogan) McCrimmon:

Esther, wife of Donald, age 21, b. Ireland, at home This census record would indicate that Donald was born in 1845 and Essie in 1849. However, Essie was born in 1845, so the census cannot be trusted.
Essie McLeod's obituaries name her husband as "Daniel McLeod", as does the old Grogan family chart.
"Daniel Martin Mcleod", a native of Canada, declared his intention to become a citizen of the United States, dated 17 June 1890 before the Clerk of the Superior Court in the County of Alameda, State of California. No details are given as to his person, except that he had been a subject of Queen Victoria.
My grandmother, Betty Jane (Steinhoff) Sheedy remembered him referred to as "Uncle Donald" McLeod.
If he is the same man, he was variously called Donald and Daniel.
Other researchers have indicated that census information shows he was born in March 1845 in Canada.
It seems most likely that Daniel/Donald McLeod was the son of Jonathan and Catherine (McCrimmon) McLeod, and hence a nephew of Kenneth McCrimmon.

One Donald Macleod was born 15 March 1844 in Lochiel, Glengarry, Ontario, Canada. He was the son of Jonathan Mcleod (b. 24 Feb. 1815 in Glenelg, Inverness, Scotland and baptized 26 Feb. 1815 in Kirktown, Glenelg; son of Malcolm McLeod and Ann Campbell) and Catherine McCrimmon (b. 24 Jan. 1815 in Glenelg, Inverness, Scotland and baptized 15 Feb. 1815 in Kirktown, Glenelg; daughter of Fauquhar McCrimmon and Rachael McRae). [Note: Kenneth McCrimmon was also a child of Fauquhar McCrimmon and Rachael McRae. Hence, Kenneth McCriimmon would have been Donald McLeod's uncle.]

There is a bit of confusion, as several researchers show slightly different information for what appears to be the same family:
Donald McLeod, b. 2 May 1844 in West Hawkesbury Twp., Prescott Co., Ontario, Canada, was a son of John and Catherine (McCrimmon) McLeod, who were both born about 1814 in Scotland and married 21 December 1841. Thier residence in 1842 was Lot 8, Concession 8; in 1844 it was Lot 14, Concession 4; and in 1851 also in West Hawkesbury Twp., Prescott Co., Ontario, Canada.
John and Catherine (McCrimmon) McLeod had the following children (all b. in West Hawkesbury Twp., Prescott Co., Ontario):

I have actual birthdates for only four of their offspring based on church records, and About dates based on census records for the others: Mary 20 Aug 1842; Donald 15 Mar 1844; Peter Abt 1846; Malcolm 22 Jul 1849; Ann Abt 1850; Mary Ann 24 Sep 1852; Rachel Abt 1856; John Abt 1859; and Margaret Abt 1863.
"Donald was baptized 14 of Jul 1844, and his birth date on his baptismal record is recorded as 15 March 1844."
