a. Note:   ized 28 June 1728 at Pauchaug Church (then the Second Church of Preston, now the First Church of Griswold), Connecticut. He was married on 13 December 1749 to Jeneverth Branch, the daughter of Peter and Content (Howes) Branch of Preston. Jonathan was a veteran of the American Revolution, having served briefly in the Connecticut Militia under Captain Skinner in 1776 and later with Captain Avery in 1781. His grave stone is still legible in the Hopeville (Gates) Cemetery just south of Hopeville and the Pauchuag River in Griswold.
  Jonathan Phillips died 12 December 1786 (date from his grave). An inventory of his estate, amounting to £426.3.4, was dated 25 December 1787 and recorded 26 December 1787. His estate included clothing, furniture, household items, gardening, farm and carpentry tools and livestock. Hen held a note for £1.10 against William Green of Rhode Island, dated 19 June 1786 and due December 1787; a note for £3 against Jonathan Phillips, Jr; a note for £1.7 against Daniel Phillips; and a note for £0.15 against Isaac Harrington. He owned real estate in Preston worth £230, real estate in Voluntown worth £100 and real estate in Plainfield worth £8. (Plainfield, Connecticut, Probate Records, Vol. 8, pp. 332-333)
