a. Continued:   Joseph and Alice each signed their marriage record with their marks, indicating they were not literate.
  Joseph Proctor and his family took passage on the ship Civilian, Nathe. Inland (or Ireland) Master, departing from Liverpool, England, and arriving at New Orleans, Louisiana, on the 11th of April 1830. They were apparently the only passengers, and the ship's manifest lists them as "one family":

They settled in the Missouri Bottoms in Illinois, across the Mississippi River from St. Louis. Joseph and Alice both died within a few years of their arrival, leaving a large family.
