Continued: Johann Christoph Scheidt was likely born between the 1730s and mid-1740s. Christoph Scheidt was a Dragoner (Dragoon -- mounted infantryman) and served in the "Leib Esquadr." (Body Squadron) in the Old Prussian 12th Regiment of Dragoners, which was stationed at Greifenberg, (now Gryfice, Pomerania, in northwestern Poland), in the 1760s-1780s. The birth of an illegitimate daughter in 1766, his 1768 marriage, and the births of seven more children (up to 1785), were recorded at the Ev. Church for the Garnisonsgemeinde Greifenberg (the garrison church at what is now Gryfice, Pommern, Poland). He may have had roots in western Germanyt -- possibly Württemberg where his wife was born and the the 12th Regiment originated. Or he may have been born elsewhere in what is now Germany or northern Poland (West Prussia) where the surname Scheidt (variously spelled) is found. Birth and baptism records survive for number of boys named Johann Christoph Scheidt (variously spelled) who were born in the 1730s and 1740s. It is also possible that Christoph came from from Bütow, Lauenburg, Rummelsburg or Schlawe -- all apparently in Pommern (now northern Poland) from which the 12th Regiment of the Prussian Dragoons apparently drew some of their replacements in the late 1700s . Colonel Friedrich vd Osten History of Dragoner Regiment 12: With pre-contract of September 28, 1741 King Frederick II took over from Prussia of Württemberg - as formerly even an infantry regiment - the 1734 cuirassier regiment "Duchess Marie Auguste" set up and 1741 in the "House Dragoons Regiment "converted regiment of the duchess-widow. Now it was only 300 men strong and should be doubled by recruits from Württemberg again. As the regiment had been newly clothed shortly before, on April 1, 1742, the king ordered that his uniform be retained for a further two years to cover the cost of missing horses and riding-boots. At the 14th. In June 1742, it arrived in Berlin with two mounted and three unskilled squadrons and was formed in Halle. Then it came to Pomerania in the former quarters of Drag. Rgt. 2 in Treptow and surroundings. It was now called "Alt-Württemberg". Between 1743 to 1794, replacements from the counties of Bütow and Lauenburg and parts of the district Rummelsburg with/from the cities/towns of Schlawe, Lauenburg and Bütow. [Johann Christoph Scheidt likely joined the regiment in the middle of this period, and may have come from one of the places noted.] From 1795 to 1806, replacements came from Southern Prussia with the districts Peisern, Brzesc, Radziejow, Wartha, Kalisch, Konin and Kowal. The regiment stood in the following garrisons: 1743-1772 in Treptow au. Rega, Wollin, Greifenberg, Massow and Naugard [now Trzebiatów, Wolin, Gryfice, Maszewo, Nowogard -- all in Pommern, Poland] 1773-1774 in Hohensalza [now Inowraclaw, Poland] 1775-1784 again in the Pomeranian locations 1785-1789 in Greifenberg, Reetz, Naugard, Wollin and Massow from 1796 to 1799 in costs, Koschmin, Schmiegel, Karge, at times Krotoschin and Peisern [now Koźmin Wielkopolski, Smigiel, Kargowa, Krotoszyn, and Pyzdry, all in Posnan, Poland] 1800 to 1806 in costs, Meseritz, Schmiegel, Peisern and Krotoschin [now Międzyrzecz, Smigiel, Pyzdry, and Krotoszyn] In 1743 [likely a couple decades before Christoph joined the ranks] the regiment's nominal strength was 32 officers, 60 non-commissioned officers, a timpanist, four oboists, 15 drummers, 660 dragoons, five flag makers, twelve heads of staff, 60 overcompletes and 745 horses without officer horses, a total of 849 heads. Thus, the Chevauxlegers Regiment Rutowsky with four squadrons easy dragoons each with six officers, eight non-commissioned officers, two drummers, a flag-maker, 100 commons was assigned to the regiment as the second battalion. In 1806 [likely after Christoph was no longer in military service] with the corps Le Coq, then at Blücher, it broke up in the surrender of Ratekau on 7 November. The depot in Kosel was later distributed, also to the Hus. Rgt. 6th Battles: At Hohenfriedeberg it attacked on 4 June [1756] as a reserve of the second meeting on the left wing before Thomaswaldau under Zieten together with its regiment, as the Cuirassier Brigade Kyau broke and in the difficult terrain only by the Zietendiscovered by Teichau had to cross.
