Note: o. (according to her obituary), or in Oakland, Alameda Co., California (where her parents lived) in 1888, the daughter of George and Alice [Forrester] McCrimmon. Her father died when she was four years old and Hazel lived for a few years with her paternal grandparents, Kenneth and Mary Jane [Grogan] McCrimmon on Third Street in Oakland. She returned to live with her mother in Benicia, Solano Co. upon Alice's second marriage to Malcolm Reid in 1898. She also spelled her name "Hazle" for a time. Hazel married James "Jim" Steinhoff, brother to John Proctor "Proc" Steinhoff who married Hazel's sister, Eva; their children were, therefore, "double" cousins. Hazel and Jim had three children: Nancy "Adele", Aileen Lucille, and Irving "Bud" Steinhoff. Steinhoff was also spelled "Stinehoff". The family lived on Thornton Ave. in Newark, Washington Twp., Alameda Co., Calif. Hazel was a homemaker and made very good cakes. She also tatted, made beautiful lace and was a good seamstress. Hazel died young of cancer at age 49 at the hospital in San Jose, Santa Clara Co., Calif. Her funeral was held at Niles; she was cremated in San Jose and her ashes are buried at her mother's grave site in the Saint Helena Pioneer Cemetery in Napa Valley. OBITUARY: "Funeral Rites Held for Mrs. Hazel Steinhoff "The passing of Mrs. Hazel Steinhoff, 49, of Newark on Tuesday after a brief illness came as a shock to her family and friends. She has resided in Newark for many years. She was a native of St. Helena, California. Funeral Services were held from the Berge Mortuary at Niles, yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock, to Oak Hill Crematorium at San Jose. "Mrs. Steinhoff was a member of the Neighbors of Woodcraft of Niles. "She is survived by her husband, James Steinhoff, and children, Mrs. Aileen Bell, Mrs. Adele Mento, Irving Steinhoff, all residing in San Francisco. She was a sister of Mrs. Eva Steinhoff of Newark. OBITUARY: "Week's Illness fatal for Mrs. Hazel Steinhoff "NEWARK--Funeral services for Mrs. Hazel Steinhoff, 49, of Newark, will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Berge Mortuary Company parlors at Niles. Cremation will follow at the Oakhill Crematorium at San Jose. "The deceased succumbed to a week's illness at the San Jose hospital. She was the wife of James W. Steinhoff of Newark, and was the sister of Mrs. Eva Steinhoff of this community. She is survived by three children, Mrs. Aileen Bell, Mrs. Adele Mento and Irving Steinhoff of San Francisco. "She was a native of St. Helena, California, and was a member of the Neighbors of Woodcraft of Niles."
