Note: erkins) was born in 1857 in Canada (but supposedly a U.S. citizen at birth -- likely not correct). Her father apparently died when she was very young. It appears that she lived in Canada until she was about three years old (say 1860) or perhaps as late as 1865. She was in Illinois with her family by 1870 and removed to Alameda Co., California by 1878. She married first John Monks (who was a half-brother to Alice Ellen Proctor who married Wm. Charles Steinhoff). In 1880, they were living in the household of his mother and step-father, John and Nancy (Blacow; Monks) Proctor, in Irvington, Washington Twp., Alameda Co., Calif. She married a second time a man named S. J. Logie. She and S. Logie resided in southern California. She was widowed prior to 1920 when she was living in San Diego. She moved to Glendale, Los Angles Co. about 1922 where she died in 1931. Samantha became an evangelist, was an early adherent of Aimee Semple McPherson and a member of the first Foursquare Gospel Church in Glendale. She had no issue. Samantha apparently went by the name Amanda (or it was miswritten in the 1880 census). She was affectionately called "Aunt Mattie" by her family. Betty Jane (Steinhoff) Sheedy recalls visiting her great-Aunt Mattie in southern California when she was a girl, and receiving $100 from her estate in 1931. There is some confusion as to her two husbands: There seem to have been two men named John Monks in California in the late 1800s (see notes under John Monks--also note that Samantha's husband, John Monks, was the half-brother of Alice Ellen Proctor who married Samantha's brother, Wm. Charles Steinhoff.) Secondary marriage records of Alameda Co. show she married John "T." Monks, but the man who went by that name was born in Ohio and apparently was not the same. One John T. Monks married a woman named Bertha, moved to Shasta Co. and then Tehama Co., Calif. There is a mention of John Monks (the farm laborer of Alameda Co.--presumably the son of Nancy (Blacow) Monks Proctor and the husband of Samantha Steinhoff) as late as 1894. Samantha was either widowed by or divorced John Monks. Sometime after that, Samantha married one S. J. Logie and was widowed before 1920 as she is noted as a widow in the census that year (unless she was divorced and only reported that she was widowed). The only S. J. Logie I could find also appears in the 1920 census living in Long Beach, Los Angeles Co., Calif.: Samuel J. Logie, aged 70, cabinetmaker, b. Canada, fath. b. Scotland, mo. b.
