Note: Alton "Al" Adair Steinhoff (1916-1975) Alton "Al" Adair Steinhoff was born at his parents' ranch house near Mowry's Landing, Washington Twp., Alameda, Co., CA, the son of John Proctor and Eva [McCrimmon] Steinhoff. He and removed to Newark with the family in 1927. His father died in early 1928. He was educated at the one-room school at Mowry's Landing and later graduated from Washington Union High School. He was very musical in his youth, playing the piano and in the school band. He worked in a bank in Centerville (now Fremont), Washington Twp., Alameda Co. for a time. He was then employed in bookkeeping in Sacramento Co. where he met his first wife, Valli Julia Braun. Alton enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served one tour. After the war, Al worked in a grocery store and owned and operated a service station. He then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served one tour. Afterward, he became an automotive service manager in Oakland. Valli died in the mid-1950s. Al married twice more, the second to Grace who divorced him, and the last marriage to Winifred who preceded him in death. Al lived in Oakland and San Leandro. He had no children -- this may have been due to mumps he contracted while young. Al resided last in San Leandro, Alameda Co., CA. He was troubled with alcoholism much of his life. Al loved fishing and enjoyed bird hunting. He had a mild disposition and was very well liked. He died at the Veterans' Hospital at Livermore, CA in 1975. He was cremated and his ashes are held at a military cemetery (at San Carlos or San Francisco?).
