Continued: Florence attended finishing School and resided with her great-uncle, Joseph Holmes in Sinclairville, NY for a time, as early as 1898. Uncle Joe escorted her from Northport, WA to Sinclairville, NY and back via Marshall Co., IA and Columbiana Co., OH where many relatives lived. They also attended the 1898 World's Fair in Buffalo, NY (one of the expositions where Uncle Isaac Guker of Canyon City, OR won medals for his fabulous gold specimens from the Great Northern Mine on Canyon Mt., Grant Co., OR).
An oath was administered for Florence W. Phillips as Clerk in the post office at Northport, Washington, subscribed before the Postmaster, Wm. F. Case, 18 December 1905.
Florence Sheedy proved a homestead that became part of the Phillips Ranch holdings near Northport: "Formerly Florence W. Phillips" patented 120.37 acres of land situated in Stevens Co., Washington, described as "the southwest quarter of the northeast quarter, the southeast quarter of the northwest quarter, and the Lot two of Section eighteen in Township forty north of Range forty east of the Willamette Meridian." The patent was signed 7 March 1910, by President William H. Taft, by his acting Secretary.
She was commonly called "Toots" and was affectionately known as "Granny Girl" to the family. She lived as a widow for 29 years, residing some of the time with her sons, and left this world in her 99th year, with three sons, seven grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren surviving her.
