Continued: Most descendants agree that Jacob was born around 1782. Unfortunately, he died prior to the 1850 Census and we have no firm record that indicates his birth year or age. The 1830 US Census for Randolph County, Missouri indicates he was aged between 40-49, indicating he was born about 1781-1790. Jacob Maggard and family reportedly left Tennessee for Kentucky about 1802. They continued west at an very early date. A family story relating to this side of the family (either the Maggards or Skinner lines) indicated that the family lost plantation in the New Madrid earthquakes (1811-1812) and afterward moved north to what is now north-eastern Missouri between about 1815. Jacob Maggard paid property taxes in Howard Co., Missouri in 1817, and in Chariton Co., Missouri in 1821. He apparently then lived a short time in Randolph Co., Missouri , and removed to what would become Scotland Co. by about 1836 where he and a small group of pioneers started a settlement near Pleasant Retreat. Family stories relate that while a resident of Scotland Co., Jacob Maggard was known to take his gun to church, kill a deer on the way, and leave his son to watch it until he returned. His widow, Susan, lived with their daughter Elizabeth Ann (Maggard) Johnson in Scotland Co., Missouri in 1850. **** Jacob Maggard patented three parcels of land in MO in 1829 and 1844. **** Dave Maggard (leftysoldguitar@@yahoo.com) wrote: “Jacob Maggard was born to Henry Maggard and Margaret Sullivan before 1782 in Sullivan or Davidson County, Tennessee. After his marriage to Susan Bright, he lived in Ky a few years, then pioneered to Randolph County, Missouri in 1815 or 1816, and built a fine two story home which was used as a Union hospital after the battle of Vassar Hill on July 18, 1862. This battle took place between Maj. Cloppers Union forces , 11th Calvary Missouri State Line Militia and Confederate forces under the command of Col. Joe Porter. 83 Union forces were killed or wounded, and 23 Union fatalities were later buried on the Maggard farm which were casualties of that battle. The Jacob Maggard house is now owned by Dean E. Bradley and is vacant at this time, and is currently on the State and National historic register.” [NOTE: To comment on a few claims in David Maggard's note... The home that was used as a hospital after the Battle of Vassar Hill may or may not have been the same home built by Jacob Maggard, Sr. Other sources state that this home was built by his son, Jacob Maggard, Jr., and Jr. owned and occupied the home at the time, in 1862. See notes under Jacob Maggard Jr.--NMS] **** Information given here for some of the children came from Kate Lund of Apple Valley, Calif. **** **** The following deed appears to refer to Margaret (Mauck) Maggard (ca.1721-ca.1798), wife of David Maggard (ca.1718-1775) of Shenandoah Valley, Virginia.
