Notes
a. Continued:   In a biographical sketch of her son-in-law, Irvine Johnson, in History of Los Angele County [California], it states that Susan (Bright) Maggard was a native of South Carolina, and that her husband, Jacob Maggard, was a native of East Tennessee.
Susan (Bright) Maggard, age 67, appears in the 1850 US Census for Mt. Pleasant Twp., Scotland Co., MO, living in household #476 with the family of her daughter, Elizabeth (Maggard) Johnson.
Susan (Bright) Maggard is believed to have accompanied her daughter, Elizabeth Ann (Maggard) Johnson and family, on the "Hope Wagon Train" to California in 1853. She may have died in Missouri before they left, on the trail (although this seems less likely, since a family story likely would have been passed down about it) or in Sonoma County, California, where the Johnson's were living in 1860 (without Susan).
A number of descendants claim that Bright and Maggard Descendants were part Indian. There is no documentation to support this claim, and no known descendants carry Native American DNA. However, some descendants carry Sub-Saharan African DNA.
