Notes
a. Note:   rom an old family Bible record furnished by Bernice Hisle and submitted to the Estill Co., Kentucky Historical and Genealogical Society by Lorene Rose. The information was printed in the society's newsletter, Vol. IX, No. 12, April 1990.

He is claimed by some to be "John Olen SKINNER" and by others "John Lloyd SKINNER" (please read notes under his daughter, Nancy Rebecca, for a similar claim).
Janest E. Hager (janest@@lakemail.com) claims that John's father was one Cortland Skinner who died in 1794 in New Jersey.
I have read one claim that John's father or brother was named Joseph Skinner.

NOTE: This information was compiled from various unverified sources corroborated by a chart filed at Genealogy Forum of Portland, Ore., submitted in 1961 by Mrs. Robert Potts of Albany.
NOTE: To avoid confusion: John Skinner (1764-1840) was nearly old enough to be the father of his younger siblings and also lived in MO; he should not be confused with their father, John Skinner b. 1737.
NOTE: Initial research shows there were colonial "Skinner" families in MA, CT, LI, NY, NJ, and PA --at least three separate ones in NJ-- and also in VA, NC, SC, and GA prior to 1737 when our John Skinner was born and he was likely not the first generation to live in America. The name of his one son, Cortland, suggests a connection to a specific Skinner family of New Jersey. More work needs to be done to verify why it is believed "our" John Skinner came from New Jersey.
NOTE: A Joseph Skinner was in Madison Co., KY in 1789 (tax list records)
The following people named Skinner paid property taxes in Montgomery Co., MO between 1819 and 1825:
 SKINNER
 Daniel
 Eleanor
 Francis
 Hugh A.
 John Sr.
 John Jr.
 William
