Notes
a. Continued:   Henry Rowe (alias George Green) was born 1 February 1829 in Oulton, Norfolk, England, the son of Joseph Rowe and Elizabeth Bartell or Bartwell. His birthplace is believed by some descendants to have been the village of Houghton in Huntingdon, about 20 miles northwest of Cambridge, but he may have been born elsewhere in Huntingdon, or in Cambridgeshire.
It is unclea why the family changes its name to green at some point.
On 27 April 1850, "George Green" married Jane James Wheaton at Chatteris, Cambridgeshire. His name in the Parish records of his children is written "George Green", but one place this name has been stricken and "alias Henry Rowe" was added, indicating that both names were used before he left England.
Curiously, George Green (alias Henry Rowe) and wife Jane with their infant son Isaac were not located on the 1851 Census in England in Chatteris or elsewhere.
Another George and Jane Green were enumerated in Chatteris in 1851, but they were about 10 years older and they had older children in their household.
Henry, Jane and their older three children immigrated to the United States in 1855. They sailed from London, England, on ship Margaret Evans, S. C. Warner, Master, and arrived at New York on 19 September 1855. The ship's manifest (page 2) lists:
Henry Green, 27 (no occupation given) Jane " ", 27 Elizabeth " ", 4 Grace Mercy " ", infant 3 (months) They were all born in England and intended to be come residents of there United States.
After arriving in the United States, the family revetered to the surname Rowe.
By February 1856, Henry was farming at Pulaski, Jackson County, in the southern part of Michigan.
The 1860 U.S. Census enumerated Henry Rowe's household in Pulaski, Jackson County, Michigan. Henry (31) worked as a farmer, owned $100 woth of land and $50 in personal property. The household included his wife Jane (30), and four children: Elizabeth (8) and Grace (5) who were born in England, and Eliza (2) and Alice (1) who were born in Michigan.
By 1863, the country was gripped by the War between the States. Although nearly 36 years old, and with a family of five daughters, he volunteered for three years of military service 11 December 1863. He was assigned to "I" Company of the Second Michigan Calvary. Henry was ill during much of his military career. By 1 March 1864, he came down with "lung fever" and was hospitalized at Nashville. The rest of his service was interrupted by periods of hospitalization at Detroit and Louisville. His company was mustered out at Macon, Georgia 17 August 1865, about three months after the war ended. His army record described him as 5 feet, 8 1/2 inches tall with hazel eyes, fair skin and brown hair.
Sometime in the 1860s, Henry's father, Joseph Green, immigrated to Michigan and also went by the surname Rowe. Joseph (age 66, no occupation) was enumerated in Henry Rowe's household in 1870. They continued to reside in Pulaski, where Henry farmed and Jane kept house. Their household included eight children: Elizabeth (18), Grace (15), Eliza (12), Alice (11), Mary (8), Homer (6), Hellen (4) and Clara (1).
By 1880, the family removed north to to Baldwin in Pleasant Plains Twp., Lake County, Michigan. Henry continued to farm and Jane kept house. Only two children remained at home: Ellen (age 14) and Clara V. (age 10).
Henry and Jane were enumerated on the 1900 Census in Pleasant Plains Twp., Lake County. His occupation was "market gardener". The census recorded that the immigrated to the United States in 1855 and Henry was a naturalized citizen. Jane had given birth to 11 children, only 7 of whom were still living.
After Henry's death, the 1910 Census recorded that Jane (age 80) lived alone in Baldwin, Pleasant Plains Twp., Lake County, Michigan, where she farmed on her own account. This census also indictaes she had given birth to 11 children, and 7 were living, as well as the fact that she immigrated from England in 1855.
Henry made his first application to Washington for a pension based on service-incurred disability in 1885; his disability was given as "lung difficulties". The application was denied, but he applied again in 1907 and it was granted.
Henry Rowe died 2 September 1908 at Baldwin, aged 79 years, seven months, one day. Jane was awarded a widow's pension in 1909. She survived him by five years. Three infant sons preceded them in death. Henry and Jane are both buried at Baldwin, Michigan.
(The above information is largely from an account written by the late Roy Sheedy of Portland, Oregon.)

Henry Rowe's marriage record gives his name as "George Green", son of Joseph Green and notes his occupation as "labourer". He was a farmer in Michigan but, late in life, he evidently became a mason as his occupation listed on his death certificates states "mason". We have no other indication that he became a brick or stone mason, but he is believed to have been a member of the Masonic Lodge. A likely brother, Joseph Rowe (1842-1919), also immigrated to Michigan and was a mason.
Henry Rowe's death certificate also offers his birth date, death date, date and place of burial, names his father, Joseph, and mother "Elizabeth Bartell" -- the informant was his daughter, Clara McEwen of Luddington, Michigan. It states he was married for 29 years and that 11 children were born to the union, eight of whom were still living.
It is believed they immigrated from England to Ontario, Canada, and from there entered Michigan, as that was a common route for English immigrants.
  ***
No record was found in English indexes for a boy named George Green, son of a Joseph and Elizabeth, who was born or baptized in 1829. Several boys were noticed in 1828 and 1830, but non in Cambridgeshire or Huntingdonshire.
Perhaps of no consequence to our family, but as a strange coincidence, a boy named "Henry Roe" was christened 1 February 1829 at Worsborough, Yorkshire, England (the same date we have for the birth of our George Green who changed his name to Henry Rowe). This is quite a distance from Huntingdonshire and Cambridgeshire. This boy's parents Samuel and Sarah "Roe", and their marriage record indicates that Samuel "Wroe" and Sarah Green were married 14 April 1828 at Darfield, Yorkshire, England.
