a. Continued:   She was named after her mother, Mary, and maternal Aunt, Elizabeth. She was called Lizzie when she was younger. Her husband called her Mae.
  "Miss Lizzie Whealen" was employed as a school teacher at the Marshalltown Public Schools, March-June 1877.
  One of the latest Quaker records for our family indicates that Mary E. Phillips sent a request dated 8 November 1890 for a certificate to transfer from Marietta Monthly Meeting in Marshall County, Iowa, to Chewelah, Washington. On 13 December 1890, Marietta monthly Meeting found Mary E. "Lizzie" Phillips was not a member of their monthly meeting. The family would have lived in South Dakota for several years by then, and Mary apparently was no longer a recognized member of the Society of Friends. However, Mary's sister, Florence Whealen, was granted a certificate to transfer from Marietta, Iowa, to Chewelah, Washington, dated 13 December 1890.
