Continued: NOTE: The "Whealen" name (spelling from St. Jacob's Church record, Columbiana Co., OH) is spelled many ways. Another spelling I noticed from probate and census records is "Whely" and "Wheeler." It is important to note that the spellings of surnames found in many records were written by third parties (e.g. clergy, county clerks, ship clerks, census takers, etc.) and may not be spelled the way the family would spell their name if they wrote it themselves -that is, if they could write. NOTE: "Whealen" or "Whealin" is typically an Irish name and many Irish-born immigrants were in PA by the mid 1800's; we are certainly no close relation to them. Our Whealen line was in America prior to 1785 (likely earlier) and there was little Irish immigration to western PA before then. There were "Whealan", etc. families in PA before and during the American War for Independence; at least two men, "Isaac Waylen" and "Israel Whealen" (AKA "Whealin"), show on the city muster rolls for the Philadelphia Militia, 2nd Batt 1784-1786. I also located a "Gottfried Weyland" who took passage 23 Oct. 1752 on the Ship Bawley, George Grove, Captain, from Rotterdam, last from Portsmouth. Other immigrants with various similar spellings may be found in other immigration records. It is more than likely our Fredrick Samuel Whealen was of German or Swiss extraction. NOTE: I have not found if our Whealen family had any affinity with the Society of Friends before the marriage of George to Mary Holmes in 1852. However, there was a "Weiland" family of Northumberland Co., PA, who descend from Michael Weyland (AKA "Weiland", "Welant"), a German immigrant who resided in Bucks Co. and Berks Co., PA before removing to Northumberland Co. and seems to have married a Magdalene Baker, who was a member of Quakertown MM, Bucks Co., PA prior to 1772; they supposedly left the Society of Friends in favor of a Lutheran faith. Some of their decendants removed to OH and IN. NOTE: I found a "Benjamin Whealen" of Floyd's Fork on the Bullit Co., KY tax roll in 1803. various possible spellings for "Whealen" I have found in PA: Wayan (Lancaster Co., PA) Weeland (Lancaster Co., PA) Weiand (Philadelphia, Berks Co.s, PA) Weiland (York, Philadelphia, Lancaster, Berks Co.s, PA) Weilden (York Co., PA) Weinland (Germantown, Philadelphia Co., PA) Welandy (Dauphin Co., PA) Weyand (York, Philadelphia, Lancaster, Berks Co.s, PA) Weyandt (York, Lancaster Co.s, PA) Weyan (Berks Co., PA) Weyant (Berks Co., PA) Weyland (Lancaster Co., PA) Weylandt (York Co., PA) Weynandt (Lancaster Co., PA) Whelin (Lancaster Co., PA) Wholand (Dauphin Co., PA) Whyland (York Co., PA) Wiand (of Berks Co., PA) Wiant (of Berks Co., PA) Wieand (of Berks Co., PA) Wieant (of Berks Co., PA) Wieland (Berks Co., PA) Wielandt (Lancaster, Berks Co.s, PA) Woland (Dauphin Co., PA) Wyand (of Berks Co., PA) other similar surnames in PA: Waehler Waylan Waylen Weyman Weigand Weiler Weiller Wheeler Wheyer Weydan Weyler Wheymann Woeller Wyden Wygand
