Notes
a. Continued:   Mary, daughter of Lot and Sarah (Nichols) Holmes, was born in 1830 in Loudoun County, Virginia. Quaker records show she was born 28 January 1830, but some old family notes say 20 May 1830--the earlier seems to be correct. (The same old family notes also say she died on the 27th--rather than the 28th--of Dec. 1921.)
When she was a young girl, she moved with her family to Columbiana County, Ohio where she was educated and raised as a Quaker, nearly all her ancestors being Quakers back to about the time the Society of Friends was founded.
She married Dr. George Whealen in 1852 and the following year they, her father, and other relatives removed to Marshall County, Iowa.
She and husband, George, were released from membership in the Society of Friends by their own request 10 November 1894 (Marietta MM minutes). Mary (Holmes) Whealen was the first in the family to become a Christian Scientist, but still maintained the old Quaker customs. She said "thee" and "thou" and was a solemn but loving person.
She lived as a widow for 24 years after Dr. Whealen's death and died at the age of nearly 92 in an automobile accident while visiting family near Pasadena, California 28 Dec. 1921. A gold Christian Science lapel pin belonging to Mary (Holmes) Whealen, and some silver flatware, including a spoon engraved "GMW" (George and Mary Whealen) are in the possession of Nick Sheedy, the compiler of this lineage. Given old photographs and the size of her dresses passed down in the family, Grandmother Whealen was a very small woman.
Mary (Holmes) Whealen may be buried at Pomona, California, near Los Angeles (her daughter, Anna, and Anna's husband, Benjamin Packer, moved to California in 1911 or 1912 and are said to be buried at Pomona). It is also possible that her body was cremated. It appears that Mary is not buried at Marietta, Iowa with her husband.
