Note: o Emily K. (Jr.) was only a few days old when her mother died. She apparently lived with relatives for a time. Her father may have been attending medical school at the time, or shortly afterward. At any rate, he must have had a difficult time caring for an infant after Emily, Sr. died. Emily K. "Wheelen", age 3, was living with her uncle's family, including her maternal grandmother, in Salem Twp., Columbiana Co., OH, per the 1850 Census: Columbiana Co., OH; Salem Twp., District #202; Enumerated 3 Sept. 1850 by Isaac Early. FN: 239 KERNS, William age. 30, farmer, $500 RE, b. PA Bulah age. 28, b. OH Geo. age. 7, b. OH Simon age. 4, b. OH Wm. W. age 5/12, b. OH Elizabeth age 55, b. DEL Sarah age 20, b. PA WHEELEN, Emily K. age 3, b. OH She returned to live with her father and his second wife sometime after that. Her father had married Mary Holmes in 1852. Emily appears on the 1860 Federal Census in Marshall Co., IA living with the family of George and Mary Whealen. She was noted as 12 years old in 1860. Information on Emily's family was shared by John Grimm of St. Louis, Misouri, (correspondence 2005 & 2006): Emily married Thomas Franklin "Frank" Ball on 30 Jan. 1868 in Marchall Co., Iowa. They had seven children, residing on a farm in Marshall Co. until 1890 when they sold it and moved to Galva, Ida Co., Iowa. They removed to Des Moines in 1905. Mrs. Emily K. (Whealen) Ball died there in 1913. Thomas F. Ball died in Des Moines in 1915.
