Notes
a. Continued:   Fredrick Samuel Whealen was born in Pennsylvania about 21 April 1785.
He married Christina Jane Burger, daughter of Nicholas and Anna Maria Burger, 25 Dec. 1810 in Columbiana Co., Ohio. His father-in-law was a native of Switzerland, who served in the American War for Independence as a corporal in the Northampton Co., PA Militia; the Burger family arrived in Columbiana Co., Ohio by 1805 or so.
Their marriage is recorded in Columbiana Co. records as "Fredrick Whealin" and "Jane Burger" married "by John Stough, a minister of the Lutheran Church" and notes that she is recorded as "Christina" in St. Jacob's records. The Whealen family attended St. Jacobs Church in Salem Twp. which the German Reform and Evangelical Lutheran Churches united to build in 1811. (The Lutheran congregation severed connection with St. Jacob's in 1879 and afterward held services in Lisbon.) Fredrick was installed as a deacon at St. Jacob's 10 Aug. 1823. Fredrick and wife, Christina, signed a letter for incorporation of the church in 1824. Four of their children show in the birth/baptismal record there. Fredrick and his family appear on the 1850 census, recorded as "Wheeler": He is noted as 65 years old, born in Pennsylvania, a farmer, with real property assessed at $4,000. (Federal Census; Salem Twp., Columbiana Co., OH; p. 6; 5 Sept. 1850). Also in that record were his wife, Christina, also age 65 (?sic 63), and four children: Lucinda (age 22), Rebecca (age 20), Jeremiah (age 18), and Caroline (?sic Carodile) (age 14).
Fredrick Samuel Whealen died 11 Oct. 1859, aged 74 years, 5 months, 20 days according to compiled church records and is buried in St. Jacob's churchyard, which would make his birth date . However, I was also told that he was aged 74 years, 3 months and 20 days. A research in Columbiana Co. wrote: "Frederick's birth can be calculated from his age at death to 21 April 1785" so it would seem that the month should read 5. (The death record in St. Jacob's church was transcribed as "Fridrich Whealen" by Andrew Sinon in 1873; and copied by Jean van Fossan for the NSDAR in 1962.)
NOTE: He is named in his father-in-law's will, dated 1823 and proved 1826 as "son-in-law Fredrick "Whely" (sic Whealen), husband of daughter Christina."
NOTE: He is probably the Fredrick "Wheeley" who appears on the 1820 census (page 64A --repeated) of Salem Twp., Columbiana Co., OH.
