Notes
a. Note:   Hist. of Columbiana Co. 1878. p. 239)
Jacob Whealen is mentioned in an early History of Marshall County, Iowa. His property is described as a fertile and very productive farm of the area.
There was a great controversy about the situation of the seat of Marshall County, and the people of the county voted to move it from Marietta to Marshalltown. To say it was a controversy is perhaps an understatement as it has also been described as a "war" and there was evidently blood shed over the issue. The Iowa State legislature soon after abandoned the old county court and county judge in favor of a commission and commissioners as the form of county government. There was also lawsuits over the official conduct of the former Marshall County Judge Smith. Anyway, "Mr. Whealen" was a very active party to the affairs of the day--"Mr. Whealen" very likely refers to Jacob Whealen. "Mr. Whealen" and "Mr. Dishon" were the two men who arrived at Marshalltown unannounced on a Friday (one day after the decision to move the county seat) to inform the people of Marshalltown that they would be bringing the county government, books and offices to town the following day, a Saturday--they wasted no time to get the matter settled!
Jacob Whealen was a County Supervisor, from Marietta Twp., in Marshall Co., IA in 1865, 1866, 1867, 1868, 1869, and 1870.
In 1878, a "J. Whealen" was farming in Sec. 34, and another "J. Whealen" was farming in Sec. 25 of Marietta Twp., their P.O. boxes at Marietta, Marshall Co., IA
Note:   Jacob Whealen was a trustee of Salem Twp., Columbiana Co., OH in 1846. (
