Notes
a. Continued:   Nicholas Burger was born in Switzerland in 1740, in what town or Canton, I have not found. He supposedly immigrated to Pennsylvania about 1761 where he married Anna Maria (maiden name Carl), say "about 1768" in "Bucks Co."
In fact, it seems that they lived in Berks County, Pennsylvania. People named Burger/Berger and Carl are found in the records of the Longswamp Reformed Church in Longswamp Twp. Besides Nicholas, there is a Fredrich Burger with wife Margaretha who had children born in the 1770s and 1780s. Johannes Burger and wife Christina, had children born in the 1770s as well. There was also a Catherine Burger and a Maria Burger in the Longswamp Reformed Church records as early as the 1740s and 1750s.
It would seem that they removed to Northhampton Co., Pennsylvania as Nicholas served in a Northampton Co. Militia as a corporal (see Pennsylvania Archives, fifth Series, Vol. 8, p.53). Nicholas Burger is recognized by the DAR for his service during the American War for Independence.
A Nicholas Burger (very likely the same) lived in Adams Co., PA. In 1799, he paid taxes on property in Menallen Twp. (which then included part of Butler Twp.), Adams Co., PA, assessed at $848. A "Yetter Burger" also paid property taxes in Menallen Twp. in 1799.
The Burger family removed to Columbiana Co., Ohio sometime before 1805. They were Reform/Lutheran in religion and attended St. Jacob's in Salem Twp. which the German Reform and Evangelical Lutheran Churches united to build in 1811. Nicholas' son-in-law, Fredrick S. Whealen, was installed as a deacon in 1823. (The Lutheran congregation severed connection with St. Jacob's in 1879 and afterward held services in Lisbon.)
Daniel Burger, early settler of Salem Twp., Columbiana Co., OH is the same, son of Nicholas and Anna Maria. Nicholas and Daniel Burger appear in the 1820 census for Salem Twp., page 64. Nicholas Burger died 7 Sept. 1826 and was buried 20 Sept. Anna Maria died 29 January 1828 in Columbiana Co. They are buried at St. Jacob's Church graveyard, Salem Twp. Columbiana Co.
St. Jacob's records show that Nicholas Burger was born 20 October 1740 and died 7 September 1826, but claims his age was 85y, 10m, 22d (which is four days off--if the death date and age at death are correct, his birth date would have been 16 October 1740). He was buried 20 September 1826. A Revolutionary War Veteran designation marks his grave.
The will of Nicholas Burger (1-176; case #856)), dated 22 August 1823 and proved 1 September 1826, names the following heirs: his wife Mary; son Peter; son-in-law Henry Rummel, husband of daughter Elizabeth, deceased; son Jacob; son Daniel; son-in-law Jacob Lupp, husband of daughter Mary; son-in-law George Crowl, husband of daughter Magdeline; and son-in-law Fredrick "Whely" (sic Whealen), husband of daughter Christina. Son-in-law, George Crowl, appointed executor. (from copy of original will sent by Walt and Pat Burger of Salem, OH)
NOTE: If Anna Maria was born between 1740 and 1748 and supposed daughter, Christina Jane, was born in 1787, Anna Maria would have been between 39 and 47 years-old. Moreover, if Christina Jane was born in 1787, she would have been nearly 50 when her last child was born.
NOTE: The DAR gives Nicholas Burger's death year as 1828, however the will of Nicholas Burger is on record and was probated in 1826. The DAR record likely confused the 1828 death date of his wife. DAR supplemental (Nat. No. 684501+656) accepts Nicholas Burger's grave site as St. Jacob's Church. That same supplemental lists Christina as one of his children and her spouse as "Fredrick Whealon".
NOTE: The Burger family is noted as being "Pennsylvania Dutch extraction" and "a very old and prominent family of that state" in "History of Columbiana County and Representative Citizens", p. 667, but Nicholas Burger was a native of Switzerland -though Protestant in religion and German-speaking. Neither Nicholas nor Christina Jane are mentioned in that volume.
NOTE: From Rupp's collection of Immigrants to Pennsylvania 1727-1776, I found only one man named "Nicholas Burger", p. 94: "Oct. 12, 1733. Palantines, ... ship Charming Betsy, John Ball, Master, from London. ... in all sixty [passengers, among them:] Nicholas Burger ..." The 1733 arrival date is too early to make this man our Nicholas Burger. I note him to avoid any confusion or to focus further research. There was another Nicholas Burger who lived in New York City (married 4 September 1749: Nicolas Burger to Jane du Tour).
