Notes
a. Continued:   Joseph Holmes was born in Loudoun Co., Virginia 22 Jan. 1766, the son of William and Mary (Cooe) Holmes. He was raised in the Quaker faith and lived on his father's farm, "Green Hill."
Joseph married Elizabeth B. Hughes, daughter of Isaac and Mary (Warne) Hughes, in the Goose Creek neighborhood (now Lincoln), Loudoun Co., Virginia, 4 June 1787. I have not found a record of their marriage in Quaker records, but it was likely by a Friend's ceremony as they would not have been retained as members if they were not married in the Friends' custom or otherwise made satisfaction.

Joseph Holmes witnessed a deed from Andrew Redmond to Benjamin James, 10 Sept 1787. (Loudoun Co., VA, Deed Book Q, p. 169)
Isaac Nichols (only surviving trustee of Isaac Nichols, Jacob Janney & Thomas Clowes) of Loudoun Co., to Mahlon Taylor, Israel Janney, Jonathan Taylor, Samuel Nichols, James Moore & Benjamin Taylor, 10 ac. adjacent to William Hatcher, for a meeting house and burials for all people called Quakers. Witnesses: Joseph Shields, Tho. Blackham & Joseph Holmes. Dated 12 May, 1794, rec. 12 March 1794. (Loudoun Co., VA, Deed Book V, pp. 258-259)
Joseph Holmes witnessed a deed from Sammuel Massey & Thomas & Nancy White, to Israel Janney, 8 April 1796. (Loudoun Co., VA, Deed Book X, p. 93)

Joseph pursued agriculture and operated a sawmill in conjunction with his farm (his father was a millwright, and so this was a family occupation). He and Elizabeth had ten children, all of whom were born in Loudoun Co., Virginia, and raised among Quakers. Joseph Holmes died 9 Nov. 1817, aged 41 years, and was buried 11 Nov. 1817. His wife, Elizabeth, was left with young children and likely relied on relatives and her older children to provide for the family. Court records may be found in Loudoun Co. if guardians were appointed for the minor children. She likely resided with her son, William, and his family after 1830. Elizabeth lived as a widow for 29 years until her death 21 Feb. 1847, aged 64.
NOTE: Joseph's brother, William Holmes, married Elizabeth's sister, Abigail Hughes. Their descendants also married into the Nichols and Janney families.
